I have an Infocus X1 in my home theater, and it does 1024x768 but that's a uhm, interpreted or whatever the word is, resolution, I think the full "real" resolution is like 800x600 and projecting onto a wall an image that is 72 inches wide (dunno what the diagonal measurement is) the picture quality and clarity on dvd's is just short of amazing, especially for the price, it's every bit, if not more crisp, than my 57" Hitachi wide screen projection TV in the living room. My chairs are about 10 feet from the image, maybe 11, and watching movies on it is very very nice.
I don't know how this stacks up to the older X1, looks like this has a true wide screen resolution which might make dvd's actually look better. Your "next option" up from one of these is gonna run you a lot more money, at least $1500++ last time I priced 1024x768 true resolution projectors you couldn't find any for $1500 except the occasional refurb, I'm sure they've come down since then but I doubt they've come down to $700.
What it boils down to is how much do you want and how much do you want to spend, if you want 1024x768 you'll need a bigger wallet
