too loud (Thermaltake Spark 7 or Arctic Cooling Super Silent 4 TC)

Just got a retail intel p4 2.4G processer.

Everyone told me the fans are really quiet on these things. This thing is way loud. Is this normal? It doesn't sound like a good fan to me.

Is there a good HSF I should try? I was thinking of ordering the artic cooling super silent 4 tc. I had the amd equivalent of that on my Xp 1800 and it was way quieter than this.

If you want a nice-quality unit and don't mind having to take out your motherboard to install it, the Alpha PAL8942 combined with a Panaflo L1A 80mm fan would be nice. It uses the bolt-down technique.

I thought about that one but I'd rather not remove the motherboard. Tho if I decide to buy a new case I'll probably go for it.

Maybe the Verax P16, which I recommended in another thread might be a good solution for you. This cooler has a different fan which has less turbulances and therefor less noise. Look at www.pcsilent.com for more informations.

I just checked a review site (frosty something or other) and they list the intel fan as "low noise" which is what I've heard but, man, it is way too loud. And it isn't that it is just loud. It sounds like a fan that is labouring. I think I have a defective fan. Not even my fricken thermaltake mini orb was this loud.

This looks like it would do the job wonderfully but at $69 each I think I'd rather try either the $15 arctic cooling or the $28 Thermaltake Spark 7.

Reading the reviews of the spark 7 it looks like I could put it at some pretty low rpms (and therefore noise) and still cool quite nicely.

In the meantime I'm reacquainting myself with winamp. So far I've noticed that I really do not like the built in sound on this MSI 648 board (realtek?) as much as I did my nforce. I think the nforce sound might have spoiled me. (Either that or I'm not used to having hsf noise running thru everything I listen to.)

It occurs to me that I went thru this same fun with my AMD.

Damn you, pentium 4! Don't make me go to water cooling!

Edit: Fan noise goes way down when my cat sleeps on the case. Perhaps I'll put some akasa pax mate there. (Or glue the cat there.)

Have you contacted the retailer from which you got the cpu? warranty?

nForce uses Realtek as well, but I believe it's better than the AC97 on that board... particularly if you had 6-channel onboard sound

LOL!!

Nope. I'll have to mail the sucker somewhere so I'll need a replacement or be down for a while. Once I get a replacement I'll contact intel. (Or newegg or whomever.)

Take a look at the Vantec Aeroflow. Not the quietest in the world, but very tolerable.

Don't buy either the TT or the Arctic Cooling Crap. They both SUCK! .

If you want DEAD silent: Alpha + Panaflo L1A.

What I would REALLY like is a HUGE Dell style heatsink with low noise case fan and ducting.

Hrmm Zalman makes some interesting heatsinks. Most are of very high quality and they're usually built with low noise in mind. However they aren't cheap. but if you want peace of mind, that may be the solution.
