By the way, whoever was shocked by what Stinkfist was about, go read the lyrics for Prison Sex. (can someone post them actually?) Tool is no stranger to deviant sexuality.

46&2 is a pretty standard exercise in jungian psychology. all that stuff about the shadow... basically the shadow is the traits that you deny in yourself, whether good or bad traits. actually many of their songs deal with carl jung-inspired stuff, and they've mentioned him in concert. if you examine their music through that lense, you realize that tool's music in general is about the search for god. before anyone starts mouthing off about opiate, realize that the rejection of organized religion is actually part of the process of finding god in one's own self. or at least, jung would say so, and i'd bet tool would agree.

the other thing to remember is tool has a sense of humor.

Good post, but what you call "God" (in your post), I think is merely enlightenment.

[Prison Sex]
It took so long to remember just what happened.
I was so young and vestal then, you know it hurt me,
but I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive,
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
I've got my haaands bound, my heeead down,
my eyyyes closed, and my throat's wide open.
(Do unto others what has been done to you. 2x)
I'm treading water, I need to sleep a while.
My lamb and martyr, you look so precious.
Won't you, won't you come a bit closer,
close enough so, I can smell you.
I need you to feel this,
I can't stand to burn too long.
Released in this sodomy.
For one sweet moment I am whooooole.

(Do unto you now what has been done to me. 2x)
You're breathing so I guess you're still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
Won't you, won't you come just a bit closer,
close enough so I can smell you.
I need you to feel this.
I need this to make me whole.
Release in this sodomy.
For (I am your witness that blood and flesh can be trusted 2x).
And only this one holy medium brings me piece of mind.

Got your haaands bound, your heeeead down,
and your eyyyes closed. You look so precious now.

I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this
sh!t blood and cum on my hands.
I've, come, round, full circle.

My lamb and martyr, this will be over soon.
(You look so precious. 4x)
You look so precious now.
You look so precious.

Always thought it was "forced wide open".. suppose it's just semantics though, either way the message is the same

One of the only superficial songs that seems to have been done over and over in the past is Ticks and Leeches. BUT, its saving grace is the music behind the overused idea. I still love the song, plus Maynard threw out his voice recording it, that surely has to mean something

As for Pushit, get the Salival album, they have a different version of the song, much better than the Aenima version IMO:

We've been trying something
a little different this tour.
We've been looking at
one of our songs
from a different angle,
under a different light,
so we can hopefully kind of
see it almost for the first time.
We'd like try that for you tonight, is that okay

We're gonna need your help though.
We're gonna need your help
and your permission,
so we need you to find
a comfortable space,
that is not only comfortable,
but vulnerable.
I want you to shut your eyes and go there,
and we'll meet you on the other side..

Couple comments.

First, yes, MJK is a huge anal sex fan. If you ever see him in concert (either with Tool or APC) and he doesn't mention that at least 5 times I will eat my hat.

Also, the beauty of Tool is that Maynard knows what a song means to him when he writes it, but they are all so open to interpretation that you can easily apply them and interpret them as you see fit. For example, most people think Eulogy is denouncing "idolization and religious dogma" as I believe one poster said earlier. But then you have the big line:
"You've claimed all this time that you would die for me. Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own Eulogy"

I think this says a lot about the people who run around preaching anything, be it religious or not, and then are shocked when people hold them to it, or it comes back to bite them in the ass. A beautiful line really.

While I've always been a huge Tool fan, I've gotta say that I sooooo admire the band's instrumental talent the most. Being a rhythm guy (I play bass), their drummer sure knows his stuff.

Surprising, he did in KC, as well as his usual Caligula reference, that guy is obsessed with that movie (based on the 3 concerts I have been to...).

Third Eye is a tribute to Bill Hicks, the greatest comedian ever.

Actually, come to think of it, the whole aenima album is a tribute to bill hicks and it's based on his philosphy.

I really just got into this band not to long ago. I'm surprised that some people don't get their music, the band is tight, the lyrics and vocals are also equally good. I've been listening to Aenima constantly for the last couple of weeks and its obvious that some of the songs/tracks have deeper meanings than most rock albums. So whats your take on the following tracks.

Stinkfish - maybe I just have a dirty mind but I think this song is about kinky sex or it could be about companionship but I think its sex

Eulogy - this seems like a straight-forward song, but I get the feeling that there's some underlying message to be found

H - I have'nt really looked the lyrics up on this song yet, the music is so facisnating that I have'nt really focused on the words

Useful Idiot - there may not be any special meaning behind this track, its not even music but Tool seems like the kind of band who has a purpose behind every track

Forty Six - whats your take on this song, I forget what the lyrics are

Message to Harry Manback - from what I read "Harry Manback" is a madeup name but the message is real. Apparently a friend of Maynards knew a guy who crashed one of Maynard's parties. I guess the party crasher was fairly obnoxious and ended up getting kicked out of the house, thus resulting in the message.

Hooker With a Penis - Great, great song. This song is complete ownage, whoever the kid is that this song is directed to got his ass handed to him

Jimmy - not sure what the meaning is in this song

Die Eier von Satan - Anyone know who the speaker is on this song, I'm guessing Hitler but I really have no clue. Also what does the phrase "Die Eier von Satan" mean anyway?

Aenima, Ions, Third Eye - whats your thoughts on these songs. In fact what does Aenima mean?

Stinkfist: Reminds me of someone with a drug addiction that starts off, but then wants more and then can't get enough

Eulogy: Easily about "making" fun of Jesus "Come down, get off you fvcking cross...we need the fvcking space to nail the next fool martyr"

H: I thought it stood for a Heroin addiction.. "Days away I still feel you, touching me changing me"

Hooker With a Penis: Somebody selling out...

The other songs I need to listen again

I saw Tool on 9/13/01 and APC twice, once in 2000 and once in 2003...never once did he mention anal sex.

I saw TOOL and in the middle of Stinkfist, the singer from tomahawk came out with a huge glove and proceded to insert it in MJK's ass.

Big difference between a big invisible guy in the sky and enlightenment though.. I've always thought of Tool as atheistic, maybe I'm projecting though.

I actually really like Undertow but Aenima was always my favorite, I really dig A perfect Circle's latest also, kinda reminds me of a more melodic tool...anyway, Tool was the best concert I ever went to, I think it was 1998 and it rocked, Maynard played the whole concert in Drag, it was pretty funny and they did a son with Buzz? from the Melvins, who were the opening band and it was easily the best song of the set, except for Push-it, which they have radically changed since the album (it was my favorite song on the album and even better live) but they said it was a new song with Buzz but I have never heard it again, I kinda wished I would have recorded the concert jsut so I could hear that song again.

Oh, and I always thought Stinkfist had something to do with gay sex, and did anyone ever make the cookies?
