the ranking methodology is flawed. the number of AP/IB exams taken is not a measure of how good a school is. my alma mater (hunter college high school, nyc, ny) and my bro's (stuyvesant hs nyc, ny) arent listed. imo those two schools are the best high schools (public at least) in nyc.
the ranking def. favors more affluent schools where kids just take ap tests for the hell of it (or so that was my feeling from my friends in those areas). i remember my school wouldnt allow kids to take ap classes before the entry level classes unless they studies in advance to take a placement test to ensure they knew the material in the entry level class. at the same time we were also restricted in the number of classes we could take each semester.

A significant factor is the percentage of students taking AP classes.

We don't teach AP classes in my school... our students don't take the AP exam!!!

Instead, we've got a significant percentage of our high school faculty who are ALSO adjunct professors to the State University of New York... we teach *actual* college classes in our high school... not AP classes that rely on a test.

If a student takes my calculus class, it goes on their *college* transcript as A, B, C, or D from SUNY Albany. It's identical to if the student actually went to the college campus to take the class.

That is a great program. I found out that my school now has a deal with a college in Reading to offer a dual-credit system.

Wtf? Oxnard is right next to where I live and generally considered lower class. I can't believe it scores very high. It may be a wonderful school I don't know. Yet Foothill Technology Highschool, a magnet school that ranked a perfect 10 in some study for California schools isn't even on there.

Compare from the 2004 Academic Performance Index (API) Base Report

Oxnard High
Foothill Tech

Something is definately wrong with the list.

San Marino High

Look at my school's API score ... 897

Yet your school is ranked higher than mine, which is weird.

I didn't go there. Several of my friends did however. I didn't go to public school.

Similar thing at my school, which is at a university, though we still have a fair amount of AP courses. Some courses are taken at CSU Fresno and are credited as such.

I went to a charter school. Was much better than the other public schools in my area and it's only 7 years old.

I went to a school, The Talented and Gifted Magnet, that should have been #1 or #2 - but it isn't on the list. I took 19 AP classes, and I think 14 was the average. My senior class was 32 graduates. I know for a fact that we rank higher than the Science/Engineering Magnet, which is our closest rival in Dallas - we share the same building.

another one?! I never knew you went to DBHS!

I was going to go there (or Troy), but I moved after 6th grade ... went to Quail Summit and Chaparral, though

edit: I think there's about 6 on this board who go or went to DBHS
