My school is nowhere in sight. At least using ctrl + F.

Not surprising, 95%+ of those kids were going nowhere. There were a couple AP classes and also joint enrollment with a nearby community college so it wasn't that bad.

Best of all it was free, hehe. Well, except for taxes.

My school didn't make the list....which is surprising. I would think it's one of the best in the state... By the way, private schools are included. I saw a few.

Class of 98. But it doesn't mean anything now.

my high school (Ft. Myers High) is ranked #64. I knew it would be up there!

Uhmmm... where is Bronx Science and Stuyvesant?
I would've thought those were tops in the nation.

And Brooklyn Tech, Townsend Harris?

The list does not include schools that take in more than 1/2 of its students through entrance exams.

Bronx Science is an exam school. I assume the others are too.

Oh!

Damn us Bronx Science grads are stupid. I was wondering the same thing. I wonder how our school would rank if they didn't have that criteria. I think we have like 5 Nobel prize winners from our HS. I wonder if that counts for anything?

too bad putting down I graduated from a top 100 High School in the nation on my resume won't get me any jobs. Well maybe at McD's.

Eh... reading the FAQ makes me not believe this list at all:
6. Why don?t I see famous public high schools like Stuyvesant in New York City or Thomas Jefferson in Fairfax County, Va., or the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora, Ill. or Lowell High in San Francisco on the NEWSWEEK list?

I do not include any high school that accepts more than half of its students into the school based on highly competitive academic criteria like grades and test scores. All of those schools you name are terrific places with some of the highest average test scores in the country, but it would be deceptive for me to put them on this list. The Challenge Index is designed to honor schools that have done the best job in getting average students into college level courses. It does not work with schools that have no, or almost no, average students. I want a list that measures how good the schools are, not just how good their students are.

The author should also discount high schools in rich communities too if that is the case.

I know, but lots of residents down there are rich as hell....All the places my g/f's parents picked to live were communities where dads bought there kids brand new cars for their 16th birthday. Lots of these schools have enough money to have their porm at Disney World. I feel bad for my g/f though, b/c she got to pick between Pensacola and some other school, and she picked the other school.

#2 is in bloomfield - richest neighborhood in all metro detroit. Predominantly jewish.
