I'm from Birmingham and I've barely even heard of that high school that ranks #1 on the list that's from our area. I think it has about 5 students.

I'd barely even heard of the school that's #1 on the list and located less than a mile from my office. Apparently it's a program that only top students within the county school system are invited to join. If true, that's not exactly a fair comparison as you're taking the equivalent of a tiny school made up entirely of AP-caliber students and contrasting that with much larger schools with a much more diverse mix of students.

The 3 closest high schools to where I live, none of which I went to, all of which are worse quality than other schools in the county. This "quality" indicator is a farce, and means absolutely nothing.

These kinds of lists are never a truly good indication, in my mind...for instance, the IA at #2 opened up when I was going to start high school and all of us had the option of taking it. It's an IB school, so therefore with all of their students there only taking academic classes, of course their average test score is going to be good. But man was that a school of losers.

My dad's old high school of mission high in San Francisco made it on the list, I forgot what page I was on. Either way, Mission High is one of the most ghetto, crappy schools in the bay area and the fact that it even made this list amazes me.

From the FAQ:
Every school on the list is in the top four percent of American high schools based on this measure.

So, if you accept that this metric has merit, even the worst school on the list is in the top 4% - hard to believe that there are > 25000 high schools in the US.

The metric reminds me of the old adage "If you can measure what's important, ascribe importance to what you can measure"

So? That list doesn't tell us anything about the average school in FL. For each school on that list, there could be 10, 100, or 1000 in the state that are "on academic watch".
