In my opinion, the 1998-2004 generation just taught exploits but had originality to some extent - of course, taken from MTV-USA and Hollywood, to begin with.
And the Korean kids at the time just found ways to make it hype with their talents, 08-11, a few years later, not so original.
The problem is with modern pop, when something is "hype", it doesn't mean it was originally as good as what is now considered old-skool on today's charts.
If you look at Lady Gaga, Hamasaki already filled that void in Japan, years ago.
Whatever and whichever the case however, it's all personal preference. I've seen much older woman listen to pop stations. And I've seen people born in the 80's that absolutely adore music from the 70's or 60's.
