The supposed revelations about how the countries in the Middle east feel about iran having anuclear program just supports those of us who contend if Israel were to attack the Iranian nuclear program there would be no outlandish backlash of international opinion against israel!

Of course Syria arming or continuing to arm Hezbollah is no surprise!!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_the...out/top-ten-revelations-from-wikileaks-cables

On Sunday, five international news outlets published a selection of more than 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables, provided by the website WikiLeaks. The disclosure of the cables, most of them from the past three years, offers a rare unfiltered view of the secretive world of high-level diplomacy. As such, it could complicate relations with a host of friendly and unfriendly nations.

But what did we actually learn? Here are 10 key revelations from the cables:

1. Many Middle Eastern nations are far more concerned about Iran's nuclear program than they've publicly admitted. According to one cable, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has repeatedly asked the U.S. to "cut off the head of the snake" -- meaning, it appears, to bomb Iran's nuclear program. Leaders of Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and other Middle Eastern nations expressed similar views.

2. The U.S. ambassador to Seoul told Washington in February that the right business deals might get China to acquiesce to a reunified Korea, if the newly unified power were allied with the United States. American and South Korean officials have discussed such a reunification in the event that North Korea collapses under the weight of its economic and political problems.

[Related: WikiLeaks docs reveal U.S. diplomats insulting world leaders]

3. The Obama administration offered sweeteners to try to get other countries to take Guantanamo detainees, as part of its (as yet unsuccessful) effort to close the prison. Slovenia, for instance, was offered a meeting with President Obama, while the island nation of Kiribati was offered incentives worth millions.

4. Afghan Vice President Ahmed Zia Massoud took $52 million in cash when he visited the United Arab Emirates last year, according to one cable. The Afghan government has been plagued by allegations of corruption. Massoud has denied taking the money out of the country.

5. The United States has been working to remove highly enriched uranium from a Pakistani nuclear reactor, out of concern that it could be used to build an illicit nuclear device. The effort, which began in 2007, continues.

6. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton ordered diplomats to assemble information on their foreign counterparts. Documents in the WikiLeaks cache also indicate that Clinton may have asked diplomats to gather intelligence on U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's plans for Iran, and information on Sudan (including Darfur), Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Iran and North Korea.

7. The State Department labeled Qatar the worst country in the region for counterterrorism efforts. The country's security services were "hesitant to act against known terrorists out of concern for appearing to be aligned with the U.S. and provoking reprisals," according to one cable.

8. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi are tighter than was previously known. Putin has given the high-living Berlusconi "lavish gifts" and lucrative energy contracts, and Berlusconi "appears increasingly to be the mouthpiece of Putin" in Europe, according to one cable.

[Related: The Guardian gave State Dept. cables to the NY Times]

9. Hezbollah continues to enjoy the weapons patronage of Syria. A week after Syrian president Bashar Assad promised the United States he wouldn't send "new" arms to the Lebanese militant group, the United States said it had information that Syria was continuing to provide the group with increasingly sophisticated weapons.

10. Some cables reveal decidedly less than diplomatic opinions of foreign leaders. Putin is said to be an "alpha-dog" and Afghan President Hamid Karzai to be "driven by paranoia." German Chancellor Angela Merkel "avoids risk and is rarely creative." Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi travels with a "voluptuous blonde" Ukrainian nurse.

The cables were obtained, via WikiLeaks, by the New York Times, the Guardian of Britain, Der Spiegel of Germany, Le Monde of France and El Pais of Spain.

Silvio Berlusconi and Chavez are pretty much exactly the same, they'll change laws to escape corruption charges, control the media and befriend people who can support their lifestyle even if it comes at a cost of their own nations population.

Other than that, if people didn't know this before, it's because they were to stupid to read and comprehend.

...why was my first thought that old Bismark Quote about Politics and Sausage? (..."better to not see them being made..")

Sarcasm notwithstanding: Given the stakes, it would be foolish to ignore observations into people's personality and behavior. And while you might object to the phrase "Alpha Dog", it is a truism that dealing with a leader who has a 'Type A' personality would require a different approach than Mrs Merkel's (apparent) Type B.

On Turkey, which many bleeding hearts around here cherish as their true ally against the Zionist oppressors:

1. Sponsoring Al Qaeda in Iraq
2. Arduan is under influence of radical Muslims
3. His foreign minister is considered an extremely dangerous persona by the state department
4. Arduan helped his friends get national projects in Iran, sometimes against the will of the Iranians and at the expense of Turkish national companies

Quite some ally, eh?

A top 10 list that doesn't have the general negative view that diplomats had of the UK is not a real top 10 list. That will probably have a lasting effect. There can be no doubt that the "special relationship" is dead.

The Brits should have never castrated Obama's Grandpa. They dun goofed up. Obama promised us transparency and we have it! Perhaps Goldman Sach's puppet strings on Obama's back aren't as taut as thought?

I don't understand how the following cable cannot be in any top 10 list. It describes a meeting with an American Ambassador with Prince Andrew of the UK, an inbred given special privileges as Special Representative for International Trade and Investment because of his inbred bloodline.

SUBJECT: CANDID DISCUSSION WITH PRINCE ANDREW ON THE KYRGYZ
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/us-embassy-cables-documents/175722?intcmp=239

Addressing the Ambassador directly, Prince Andrew then turned to regional politics. He stated baldly that "the United Kingdom, Western Europe (and by extension you Americans too") were now back in the thick of playing the Great Game. More animated than ever, he stated cockily: "And this time we aim to win!" Without contradicting him, the Ambassador gently reminded him that the United States does not see its presence in the region as a continuation of the Great Game. We support Kyrgyzstan's independence and sovereignty but also welcome good relations between it and all of its neighbors, including Russia.
Showing that he is an equal-opportunity Great Game player, HRH then turned to the topic of China. He recounted that when he had recently asked the President of Tajikistan what he thought of growing Chinese influence in Central Asia, the President had responded "with language I won't use in front of ladies." His interlocutors told the Prince that while Russians are generally viewed sympathetically throughout the region, the Chinese are not. He nodded, terming Chinese economic and possibly other expansion in the region "probably inevitable, but a menace."
On the way out, one of them confided to the Ambassador: "What a wonderful representative for the British people! We could not be prouder of our royal family!"
I can just imagine the awkwardness of the meeting for the Ambassador. The tone of the entire cable is hilarious.

This is the "White House Approved" top 10 talking points. Something stinks in all this, maybe I need to pull the cover off the vents and see what it is. As recently as Friday the .gov was threatening news outlets that they would be prosecuted if they reprinted anything from the documents yet every news agency seems to have the same spin on them today. I see there is yet another "corroboration" of the USA's Iran agenda. Wish I had the time to read through 250,000 leaked state department memos to see if anything of substance actually exists in these documents.

Anyone else wonder why China launching a cyber offensive against the US isn't on this list. Seems a little odd to me.

1) Whomever is in charge of DoD security and didn't disable CDR/CDRW support should be taken out back and shot.

That is the only big revelation from the WikiLeaks cables.

The problem is that Der Spiegel, the Guardian and the New York Times (through the Guardian) were the only ones that read the documents ahead of time. The list was yahoo basically just ripping off the stories from the Times.

Furthermore, the papers decided to coordinate their features on documents over several days, so you haven't seen the last of this set.

We coordinated with the other news organizations on the timing of the release, but not the contents of our articles. We agreed to publish our articles over a number of days rather than in one great heave. The dipomatic cables cover a far wider array of subjects than the earlier disclosures of documents from the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq. This gradual release allows us — and our readers — to absorb the material and put it in context. It also allows more time for serious (and fruitful, in my view) discussions with the government what should be omitted from public disclosure.

I have to agree that this is the most pressing item here.

Meh, I say.

And if Israel takes out Iran's nuclear program there will still be a worldwide outcry, loudest from those demanding that the USA take the same action.

Because they didn't launch a cyber offensive against the US? They hacked into Google servers that were located in China.

Really? I'd think the Number 1 revelation from WikiLeaks is that the U.S. government is incapable of keeping private conversations private.

Ridiculous

1) If not Dangerous - throw them out of a plane at 15,000 ft where you found them
2) If Dangerous - throw them out of a plane without a chute at 15,000 ft where you found them

Zebo could do this with one C130 and a tank of gas.

Wrap up, come home, we don't know how to fight anymore. Or incidents like this will happen all the time

Reminding everyone how much they dislike or hate each other well this is going to bring about world peace and harmony right?

My point was building on your point, those smart to crack it would have the information, those who aren't can't figure out how it's going to work.

HDMI took only a thousand years to develop, doesn't work right, and still isn't really a stable 'standard'.

Hmm... this has government-preferred-solution written all over it!
