I have never even heard of any of them. If they are so good why aren't they expanding nationally?

I find it embarrassing that Chicago's entry for a burger joint is the Billy Goat Tavern. I have been there for lunch twice with co-workers. Here is the Saturday Night Live skit performed about this place.

The food is crap, they have a full menu of assorted lunch items but only make and serve crappy, greasy cheeseburgers. The main enjoyment of this place is watching the people come after you attempting to order their food. If you ask for water to drink, the owner will then ask you if you prefer river or lake water. A bit funny, but the food is crap.

It is a small place underneath a street, in a maintenance alley.

I think it is also somehow related to some baseball legend about a goat or its head or something.

Here is a google video search for the Billy Goat Tavern.

One of the best hamburgers I ever had was from The Ram Restaurant & Brewery. I do not drink beer but their food is excellent.

Some things just can't be easily replicated. Price at those places might be relatively high, Chef is likely very particular, or Owner is just not interested in going in that direction.

LOL 25 Degrees is on there but not The Counter? Can't speak for any of the non Cali places on that list, but 25 Degrees isn't the best burger in LA. So I know at least 1 isn't top 10 worthy, or rather it shouldn't be on the list over The Counter. Hodad's in San Diego is also better than 25 Degrees. But I will give them some credit for not putting the stupidly overrated Fathers Office on there.

Billy Goat Tavern & Grill (Chicago)

Instead of a conventional "no" I think this deserves a "FUCK NO". The only reason this place makes lists is because of it's association with the actors that were at Second City who made it onto SNL back in the golden years of that program. There are literally dozens of better burgers in the city, even some mere feet from the Billy Goat.

Kuma's Corner, Epic, Counter, Fub a Dub, DB Primehouse, and a number of others post a greatly superior product that will have you shopping for wider pants in no time.

I did try to go to the Shake Shack in NYC but I was interested in eating sometime in this decade. It has to have the longest line I've ever seen for a restaurant. The burgers did look DAMN good though.

Oh, THE HEART ATTACK GRILL!
http://www.heartattackgrill.com/

Their business model is simple. They are sick of all the vegetarian, helthy eating a-holes and state openly that their goal is to give you a heart attack. They are proud of hte calorie counts. And the best thing ... it's a cross between Hooters and Burger King.

Never been there but want to go one day.

Everyone has an opinion on the best burger joint. Lists like this are useless. You can ask 5 people the best place in town and you might get 5 different answers.

I've been to the Burgermeister in Alameda, I didn't think it was anything special. Asked for it to be cooked medium and it was more like well done and kind of dry.

The only one I've had is Shake Shack. It's a very good burger, but small and overpriced. Meat is tasty although a bit on the greasy side, buns are excellent, topping choices are lacking. Not in the top 10 of burgers I've tried let alone top 10 in the country.

Shake Shack burgers are kinda meh. Definitely overpriced. The Shack Stack in its original form (burger, cheese burger, mushroom burger all in one) was the best burger on the menu. I haven't tried its pared down reincarnation as a cheese burger + mushroom burger. You can get a better burger in NYC, though I'd say it's worth a visit for the experience.

Not my list and of course it's no name burger joints. Those are usually the best. Why would anyone want a list of best national chain burgers???

Yeah, the Billy Goat is famous for reasons other than the quality of the food. It's not bad and it's worthwhile visiting once, but it's not really a competitor on that list.
