The one that worked the best (and I didn't see in the list), was more of a local thing.
About 9 years ago iirc, a Sandusky, OH local paper ran a story that the Cedar Point rollercoaster Magnum XL-200's foundations were sinking into the ground, and that Cedar Fair was going to sell off the coaster to another park in Ohio.
I never knew it was ran as a April Fools joke article, but I never bought into it anyway, believing it was just hearsay. But so many people in school (and their parents even!) believed it and I could never convince them it was a hoax. That was one of the most viral and uncontrolled hoaxes ever, because very few caught the brief article that stated it was only a joke, and everyone believed it.
Come on... a ride that was about only 8 or less years old, had foundation that was suddenly sinking? Did the bedrock suddenly change depth or disappear?
