top Gear Jeremy Clarkson got stoned by angry Argentinians while filming TG

Apparently, Jezza's 928 happens to wear the number plate "H982 FLK," which to the Argentinians is a dig at the country's defeat in the 1982 Falklands War. While we wouldn't put it past the nationalistic Top Gear trio to poke some fun at their country's old foe (let's keep in mind the show's love of World War II jokes), that would be awfully subtle if it were really an honest attempt at mischief. Coincidence or no, retribution for TG's perceived slight was swift.

First, the city where the crew's road trip was set to end, Ushuaia, banned Clarkson. The outrage only grew from there, though, as the TG team was forced to cut its trip short by three days and flee the country after the crew and their cars were pelted by stones thrown by angry Argentinians. According to Yahoo! News, Clarkson was forced to abandon his car.

Jeremy Clarkson and the crew of Top Gear were forced to crawl underneath their hotel beds for safety after the residence they were staying in was surrounded by an angry mob in Argentina.

The cast of the controversial BBC show are now back in the UK following a swift exit from the country.

LOL I hope they aired the stoned part

Clarkson says the the number of the plate number was a coincidence. British media has had it out for him for years, so I'm more inclined to believe him than I would them.

Those plates were on that car before it was even bought by a BBC staffer, so I suppose it's just some nationalist attempt at instilling paranoia into the people. I guess this was slightly worse than Hammond's quick trip into Mexico

He just tells it like it is, and he's got an incredibly sarcastic way of describing things that the world loves.

Anyway, I also believe they had nothing to do with this this. If they did, why not make the plate more exact?

Article I read said the plate was likely from 91 or 92, so I doubt Top Gear went out of their way to do this. It could be a reference to that civil war, but it wasn't Top Gear that did it.

These are the type of things that producers do to stir the pot. Someone was responsible for procuring the cars. There must have been more than a few Argentinians involved in local production who would have told them that it would be salty to do which is something that Jeremy would allow because he is salty..

Jeremy is the soul of the show and the incredible success the show has had around the world is largely due to him. He is, however, a dick with a huge bias against most things not made in England. I don't believe he's reviewed a single American product that he liked and is usually 100% dismissive of anything made in the USA.

He has had numerous gaffes that reveal a prejudice against non-whites and it would not surprise me one bit that they/he had some role in getting the license plate that's in question. Perhaps Argentina is different, but generally, when you buy a car you do NOT also get the plate that came with it unless it's a new car.

Sadly, I'm inclined to believe they intended to do this and were surprised that the dumb Argentines (there opinion, not mine) noticed. What are the odds that a plate, chosen at random, would have such suspicious numbers/letters...

Didn't he buy a ford GT? So he liked US products enough to buy one although it did break down on him and he got made fun of on the show

Too bad they removed the plate with the numbers BEFORE arriving there, nice try though. They were told about it on twitter and within a day or two of entering the country had removed the plates. I mean, what more can you ask them to do besides remove the fucking plates? It's not as if they were parading about the town with the plates on and THEN an angry mob appeared. Also, the mob that attacked them was made up of mainly 20-30 year olds who were claiming to be veterans of a war that ended 32 years ago...

Those are British plates. In the U.K., the plates go with the car when a car is sold used. The car has the same plates from day 1 unless the owner paid for a vanity plate etc. Should be pretty easy to find out whether these plates were changed or not.

Besides Clarksons plates, another story I heard which I havent read anywhere is that May and Hammonds cars plates each had the number of killed in the war. One had the # of Argentinians killed and the other had the # of Brits killed.

I found some pictures of Hammonds and Mays cars before they were pelted and the numbers are close but not exact, at least according to what Wikipedia says the number of killed was.

This is like the time they got run out of Mississippi (or one of those bumfuck states), except this time it wasn't even intentional. It could still make for good TV, though.

also bullshit, the numbers were different, just people trying to find shit to be mad about when in truth, they were doing nothing wrong.

Seems like politicking from Argentinian politicians trying to get a boost in support from the Argentinians who still hate the UK.

Local councillor Juan Manuel Romano said the digits 269 on the number plate of the Ford Mustang Mustang Richard Hammond was driving were close to the 255 Britons killed during the 1982 war.
He added that the numbers 646 on James May's Lotus could be taken as a reference to the 649 Argentinian casualties.

Clarkson is a right-wing jerk, but I like the show a lot. Of course a lot of his jerky behavior looks to be an act for the show.

They clearly stage things. Remember the flame thrower driving down the street, 'oops' lighting cars on the side of the road on fire? Not too subtle.

The sensitivity over the Falklands doesn't make a lot of sense. It was a garbage war for political reasons on both sides that at least the Argentinians doesn't seem to get.

The Argentian generals in charge of the country were very unpopular and the war rallied support for them, while Thatcher, well, enough said.

I believe it was a coincidence. Jeremy Clarkson isn't that subtle and if he was trying to offend them he would be crowing about how well it worked.

thats his persona; if you were in the UK around the 70s you would know. he just mimics the way car fanatics talked back then. in the same way, all his jokes are old British Empire era references.

kinda like someone pretending to be a cowboy and using the words "injuns" and "pilgrims".

The sad thing is, the show doesn't need the racist nonsense as the producers are very good and the editing is about as good as it gets. Clearly Clarkson is the star and the other two quite visibly defer to him in almost every episode. The BBC may say that he's on a short leash, but with all the gaffes he's made over the years the fact that he's still there tells the story.

It is likely that some of Clarkson schtick is for show but it does appear much of it is who he is.

That said, the BBC version of the show is vastly superior to the USA version of the show. Who's bad idea was it to make an American version???

I don't really agree with that sentiment. At least from what I can recall, they don't review all that many American cars to begin with. The only time they seem to take a really in-depth look at them is when they come to America, but apart from that, they may get a vehicle in every now and again. From what I can recall, the only American sports car that Clarkson always hates on is the Ford Mustang, and that's because Hammond likes it. Keep in mind that he hates on the Porsche 911 for the same reason.

I recall Clarkson making good remarks about the American cars. Although, I don't think he has ever given a 100% positive review to one, but that's pretty rare from him to begin with. As much as he seems to like the Datsun GT-R, I believe his review said it "felt like a PlayStation inside".

This is like the time they got run out of Mississippi (or one of those bumfuck states), except this time it wasn't even intentional. It could still make for good TV, though.

It was Alabama. :\

That would be a REALLY REALLY REALLY strong coincidence. Clarkson is an asshole, sounds like something he'd do on purpose.
