I think the producers listened to complaints from viewers, watched the declining ratings and began re-editing the episodes to focus less on Chris. Good bet he's gone after this season if ratings don't bounce up. Not because of the rift with Matt, just because even the British viewers don't like him.

not sure he'll last the season, unless it's all filmed already.

I watched the last episode, and I'm not overly impressed with it. It did not seem very good (to me), but it was watchable at least.

I wonder what will happen in the future now (as regards the existing top gear) ?

The car review parts, are not too bad.
But I still don't think the new team, are "gelling" together much, apparently. (i.e. it seems to come across as forced acting, rather than natural).
They just do not seem to blend well together at all, on camera. So I can believe rumors that they don't get on too well off-screen.

I.e. The "messing about having fun" sections, don't seem particularly good.
E.g. Who can drive the car the highest over a big bump.

Chris Evans is officially stepping down.

http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-36707266

Ratings hit a new low, dropped from a 6.8 for the premiere to 1.9 for the finale. That's less than a third of the average for the last 10 years or so. Evans had to go, now I wouldn't be surprised if they eat LeBlanc's contract too and go right back to the drawing board. Chris and Matt sucked when they were together, but they each sucked alone too. There's nothing there to build on.

Chris Harris for main host, make it so BBC.

I don't think Harris would make it as the main host. He's good enough to keep though. They should hang onto him and Sabine and shitcan everybody else. Then try to find a strong presenter (I wonder if Michael Palin likes cars?) to be lead and form the new trio around that guy.

And for the love of god, scrap that star in a reasonably priced car segment. It sucked on old Top Gear and it sucked 1000 times worse on new Top Gear.

The original article seems to say everyone is remaining, apart from Chris Evans.

Being practical, given filming for series 2 is starting in September 2016, there would be NOT much time left, to start sacking people and replacing them.

I wonder who the new main presenter will be, especially given the very tight time scale in which to find a replacement ?

Being practical, they've been working on finding a new lead presenter and replacing the co-hosts for at least a month now. When the reviews for episode one came in they knew there was a problem and when the ratings for episode two fell off a cliff they got serious about it. They already have a list of names that they like and probably opened talks with their top pick before Evans quit.

I agree. They may have even realized, during/after series one was being filmed, as they would obviously have access to the show BEFORE we get to see it.

There have been various (UK TV) Car (and related) TV shows in the last decade or so. Maybe one of the more experienced/popular/available presenters can be selected ?
Even if they were co-host, it would probably be an improvement.

As soon as I heard (a while ago), it was to be "Chris Evans", I immediately thought "ow no", that guy was a terrible choice. I would dislike it.
It seems I was right, all along. I've never really been a fan of "Chris Evans", anyway.

Jezza, Captain Slow, and The Hamster must be laughing in their beers a bit.

It doesn't even need to be a car show guy. Richard Hammond was a radio announcer before auditioning for Top Gear. The real skill needed is to be natural and likeable on camera, that's where Chris and Matt failed. You can have an intern on staff teach you the ins and outs of each car, you just have to be able to talk about it afterwards.

They've been laughing in their beers since week 1. Hell, the contract those guys got out of Amazon they've been laughing in their champagne for months before the Top Gear train wreck. It's too bad they have such a big contract with Amazon for three years. It would have been interesting to see if the BBC caved and went running back to C/H/M after this season was such a disaster. Now we'll never know.

That makes sense. I never realized Richard Hammond was NOT a car presenter BEFORE top gear.

I wonder if the reason they had TOO many presenters in the existing revamped top gear. Was so that they could find out who the best ones are, and keep them.

I DON'T think three years is such a problem. Since they would have needed a gap of at least two years (in my opinion), to sufficiently allow the dust to settle and for Jeremy Clarkson to be mostly forgiven.

If it had been too soon, e.g. 3 months, I doubt that would have been acceptable.

In practice (sadly), I'm still somewhat doubtful, Jeremy Clarkson (and team) can/will return to top gear. But will be delighted to be proved wrong . . .

Well, their new show starts on Amazon this fall. So assuming fall of 2016, 2017 and 2018 to fulfill their Amazon contract, that means they wouldn't be available for the BBC until 2019 earliest and that's if there's no non-compete clause which keeps them off the air for x years afterward. That's a long time in TV years. By then the BBC better have found a working formula to save Top Gear or it'll be dead.

Given the size of the their deal with Amazon they're not in any hurry to go back to the BBC. They're getting far bigger salaries and a much larger per episode budget. That allows them a lot of freedom, for the original team Amazon is a much better place to be.

And yeah, too many presenters. I'm wondering if that was the original plan or were their roles bumped up when early on it became apparent that Chris and Matt were not going to be very good? They do need to cut back though, three is plenty and more than that people start to get lost. That Eddie Jordan guy might as well not have been there at all.

LMAO, I was too generous giving Evans a season...the guy is a klarse merchant banker, who can get away with it on radio, but different story with TV. God riddance, hopefully they can find anyone better.

Usually once a team moves over onto another "TV channel", they stay there and/or disappear (fade away).
E.g. Fifth gear (original top gear team, from a while ago).
Returning to the original channel, is rare. (I'm using the term "TV channels", loosely because there are so many media outlet options these days).

When I first noticed "Eddie Jordan", in the him taking the railways episode. I thought/assumed that he was just a guest. I did not realize he was suppose to be a presenter, he just did not seem right for such a role.

On the other hand I find "Eddie Jordan", seems to have some of the annoying "James May" type of concept (don't get me wrong. I REALLY like James May. But there is some tension, which adds to the "fun" elements of the Jezza team). So he does have at least some purpose.

I really hope LeBlanc goes with him. I didn't mind Evans but Matt LeBlanc is just HORRIBLE. He's so unnatural on the show, he just sounds like someone is feeding him lines or he's slowly reading a teleprompter with no emotion.

I like everyone else on the show.
