I think the producers listened to complaints from viewers, watched the declining ratings and began re-editing the episodes to focus less on Chris. Good bet he's gone after this season if ratings don't bounce up. Not because of the rift with Matt, just because even the British viewers don't like him.
well, the clarkson top gear had some boring episodes too. i liked the NSX bit, not so much the mustang bit.

Things have gone from bad to extremely worse for*Chris Evans, who announced his resignation from*Top Gear*earlier today. But that resignation came mere hours after London police confirmed Evans is being investigated for a reported sexual assault dating back to the 1990s.

Being practical, given filming for series 2 is starting in September 2016, there would be NOT much time left, to start sacking people and replacing them.
I wonder who the new main presenter will be, especially given the very tight time scale in which to find a replacement ?

There have been various (UK TV) Car (and related) TV shows in the last decade or so. Maybe one of the more experienced/popular/available presenters can be selected ?

It doesn't even need to be a car show guy. Richard Hammond was a radio announcer before auditioning for Top Gear. The real skill needed is to be natural and likeable on camera, that's where Chris and Matt failed. You can have an intern on staff teach you the ins and outs of each car, you just have to be able to talk about it afterwards.
They've been laughing in their beers since week 1. Hell, the contract those guys got out of Amazon they've been laughing in their champagne for months before the Top Gear train wreck. It's too bad they have such a big contract with Amazon for three years. It would have been interesting to see if the BBC caved and went running back to C/H/M after this season was such a disaster. Now we'll never know.
I wonder if the reason they had TOO many presenters in the existing revamped top gear. Was so that they could find out who the best ones are, and keep them.
I DON'T think three years is such a problem. Since they would have needed a gap of at least two years (in my opinion), to sufficiently allow the dust to settle and for Jeremy Clarkson to be mostly forgiven.
If it had been too soon, e.g. 3 months, I doubt that would have been acceptable.
In practice (sadly), I'm still somewhat doubtful, Jeremy Clarkson (and team) can/will return to top gear. But will be delighted to be proved wrong . . .
Well, their new show starts on Amazon this fall. So assuming fall of 2016, 2017 and 2018 to fulfill their Amazon contract, that means they wouldn't be available for the BBC until 2019 earliest and that's if there's no non-compete clause which keeps them off the air for x years afterward. That's a long time in TV years. By then the BBC better have found a working formula to save Top Gear or it'll be dead.
Given the size of the their deal with Amazon they're not in any hurry to go back to the BBC. They're getting far bigger salaries and a much larger per episode budget. That allows them a lot of freedom, for the original team Amazon is a much better place to be.
And yeah, too many presenters. I'm wondering if that was the original plan or were their roles bumped up when early on it became apparent that Chris and Matt were not going to be very good? They do need to cut back though, three is plenty and more than that people start to get lost. That Eddie Jordan guy might as well not have been there at all.
So you're like the only person that likes Chris EvansI really hope LeBlanc goes with him. I didn't mind Evans but Matt LeBlanc is just HORRIBLE. He's so unnatural on the show, he just sounds like someone is feeding him lines or he's slowly reading a teleprompter with no emotion.
I like everyone else on the show.
