That's why I said I work in the engineering field and didn't say I am an engineer, as I will be after my last year.

Despite the fact that I am part of this field, it's irrelevant if as it shouldn't take an engineer nor someone familiar with engineering to realize that those three are journalists not experienced engineers not even professional race drivers, which means there is a lot of stuff on the show that they might say or indicate that shouldn't be taken with much credibility. Hope that answers your speculations.

On the contrary I have a pretty awesome life, but judging from the quality of your response I am not going to bother ask about yours

BTW, may I suggest before you post anymore misinformed responses that you read my reply to AdamK47 on the second page, it might reveal to you a clearer image about my opinion.

Top Gear does suck. It really says something about people who like watching grown men fake screams of enjoyment in a car. Then get out and insult the united states for 20 minutes before getting into the next car and having another orgasm.

I watch for the entertainment value, and Top Gear is the ONLY entertaining automotive show for gearheads and kids-at-heart alike. How can you NOT like watching cars being launched into a pit, cars being blown up, a truck being included into the demolition of a building, etc... Also, their production quality is simply OUTSTANDING. Their cross-continent race/challenges are awesome. The show is pure entertainment. I'd like to do the things they do, that includes making a rocket out of a car, converting a real car into an R/C car and controlling it with people inside, racing farming equipment around a track, etc...

On top of all that, the three hosts have such great chemistry and get along so well, its like your watching your own friends being themselves and doing hilarious stupidity.

This has to be mentioned - you have some points (although I found their Golf review quite informative when I was shopping around for a car), but the show has some great entertainment value. The rocket ship was awesome, and whether or not it has some value or not, when the thing lifted off you can tell that the engineers who built it were genuinely excited that it actually worked.

The ford focus versus pigeon, the veryron versus a plane, the evo? versus the bobsled, car versus that those street jumpers in france was great, the rover versus the skateboarder? down that hill, the rover? versus that speedboat thing on the glacier, the recent american show where clarkson drove into the camp WITH A DEAD COW ON TOP OF HIS CAR just had me lol'ing for about 5 minutes. It was just so unbelievably over the top and crazy, the time when the rover was driven up that hill with gorgeous views in scotland? I think. There are just alot of so many entertaining what if races and little scripted segments that make it enjoyable.

Yes, some of it is probably scripted (I'm sure they have to do some major thinking when they create the races to make sure it stays competitive), but they can only go so far - I can remember when they were doing car versus ferry to Norway? and the speedboat broke down, can't say that was scripted. Also the rednecks attacking them was probably not scripted either.

OP has some valid points ... and to many of the naysayers, I've gotta say his post seems well thought out and organized.

I agree with many of them, but I think #1 is a matter of preference. When I watch TV, I want to see the extremes. If I want to learn about what car to buy, I'd go online.
such lame pointless waste of public resources
isn't it a private media company?
and you would be so wrong if you disagree with me
I disagree with this line

I realize you made this post somewhat in jest, but I think that anyone who truly feels this way misses the entire point of the subtlety imparted in British humour.

By and large, you're not supposed to purchase a car based on the opinions of Top Gear's hosts. They know that. They also know that testing to see if an old Toyota (Honda?) off a building and seeing that it still runs is not entirely relevant to the real world. But it's fun to watch, and very lightly mocks more serious automotive-themed television.

It's also one of the most brilliantly directed shows on television, ever. I wonder if they have the show in HD-DVD/Bluray format yet.

Keep in mind, Top Gear appeals to a general audience partly because the hosts are normal people that love cars like most of the people that watch. Thus, people want to see guys like them review the car rather than some engineer because at heart we all want to put $100,000+ cars into huge powerslides and scream like a maniac.

Your points are valid, but Top Gear is not really a car show but more an entertainment show with cars. There are other shows that address many of your points, but are no where near as fun to watch.

it's not a car show, its a testosterone-driven entertainment hour for men who still aren't past the lambp-poster-on-the-wall stage of development.

nothing is more boring than c. van tune driving yet another family sedan for "under 25"

Thank for actually reading and comprehending my OP, instead of just throwing insults my way like many of our fine members here
The BBC though privately run, it's state-owned.

First of all, WTF is wrong with you? Second order of business, if you are going to quote me never do it out of context, in my OP I said that I work in the engineering field, then you made a big deal out of it, and started questioning if I am an engineer or not, I inform you of my current status at the top of the second page and now I get this reponse from you?
Do me and the others a favor stop posting in my thread!

Come on... haven't you ever wanted to drop a camper on a Toyota pickup truck or gone skiing down a hill in a Jaguar? These guys obviously have!

It's not a serious car show, dude! It's just for fun!

The manner in which I quoted your text is entirely relevant, because as a fellow engineer-in-study, I think you're giving us a bad name.

BS! When three journalists act as an authority in the world of engineering, and people start repeating what they say as if it came out of credible source, while you Mr engineering student stand still and point the finger at me for criticizing the show, you are the one giving us a bad name, we are supposed to be scientific and accurate professionals not lame clowns!

When did they ever claim to be engineering authorities? And when were we supposed to bother to point all the scientific errors in pop entertainment? Why don't you start with Hollywood movies? You'd have a lot of fun with those. I suggest beginning with "The Core".

EDIT: You also glossed over my first post in this thread.

I am not pointing fingers, the title of the thread is TOP GEAR SUCKS, I am giving my opinion that Top Gear sucks and why it sucks, I am not saying they should be beaten to death or something, I am just saying it sucks as a car show, maybe as a sitcom or something it would be good, but as a car show not much really.

sometimes Top Gear is entertaining, but the show is soo arrogant and pointless, that I can't really enjoy it like others here. I agree w/ some of the points the OP made.

I didn't expect to see a cult following of Top Gear TBH, and my criticism had more of a sarcastic tone than it was dead serious yet people wanted to take make things more serious than they were, whatever.

I remember you calling anyone that disagreed with you an idiot. It's a tad hazy but I think throwing around something like that qualifies as flaming, which also is flamebait.

Not saying that the thread should be locked, just saying you're expecting a lot from the reader if you want us to feel a sarcastic tone with black and white words, because I did not get that in the least bit, the fact that your replies have the same quality of your original post even makes it even easier to believe that you've really taken this thing to heart.

What a load of shen? Prove it to me that I called unprovoked anyone here an idiot?
The if you disagree with me you are wrong part, was supposed to be humorous but it didn't get across somehow, but that's no biggie.

Seriously, your reasons are pretty bad. Reasons 1, 2, and 6 I offered rebuttal to, while the others were either nonsensical or not worth replying to.

Top Gear sucks big time, they hate american cars and never test cars for what they are made for...and are completely unknowledeable. See the GT500 thread.

That's not really true. They frequently review American cars and give them quite positive reviews. Richard liked both the C6 and Mustang (as did Clarkson, if you read his articles). Clarkson absolutely adores the Focus and Mondeo.

They do rag on DaimlerChysler cars, but I rarely find positive reviews of Dodge or Chysler anywhere.

Their GT500 review blasted it for having a solid rear axle, which is what the gt500 owners want.

They also blasted it for only dynoing at ~460hp and claiming it was well short of 500. Well duh, Ford never hid it was 500hp at the flywheel and not at the rear wheels.

The rear axle is a pretty bad. For the money, a C6 Corvette is way more worth it, but that's a different story
