500 ?!? hmm, well, depends on the kind of system you are looking to power. other than the usual
antec or enermax options you can have a look at this allied 400w for a nifty 30.00
it has excellent reviews and i can attest to its quality too.

Fortron/Sparkle (FSP Group), Enermax, and Antec are all good. There are also some others that I can't recall at the moment.

I like my new Fortron 350W because it uses a manu-matic 120mm fan (temp controlled + adjustable potentiometer) that can move significant air at lower (less noisy) speeds, and still crank it when you feel like it to exhaust a lot of air.

I liked my Antec True-Power 330W because it had a "fans only" output for case fans that was tied to its internal fans' temp control. It worked well.

Unfortunately, I think I ruined the Antec by changing the fans to even lower speed models, causing it to overheat. Before that, I had no problems, and should have left well enough alone instead of messing with the stock fans.

I don't have any experience with Enermax, but other people seem to like them.

I like the Fortron's best...I have Antec too, but the Fortrons are quieter...if that is a factor for you. Both have very steady output.

I like my Thermaltake 420W and my dads Thermaltake 480W is great as well. Silent and very unlikely to be deadly to other components :Q

I'll vouch for Seasonic as well. Made in the USA, VERY good quality, VERY quiet (at least the ones with the single 120mm temp-controlled fan, the "Super Tornado" line), supposed to be 10-20% more efficient (ie, saves money when PC is on 24/7). A little pricey, but worth it if you're looking for a good quality low-noise power supply (although I will say I haven't tried the Zalman ones, which are also supposed to be very quiet). I've only seen them at Fry's / Outpost.com, but www.silentpcreview.com has several favorable reviews on them.

Another vote for Seasonic. It's super silent and it's suppose to be efficient. I don't think they are made in the USA like what Matthias99 stated, because there factory is in Guangdong, China.

I would suggest going with a 400watt one, 560 seems to be alot of overkill, unless you're going to be running 6 ide hd's, 4 optical, 2 sata, dual cpu, all ram slot and all pci slots occupied, 4 usb devices running solely off the computer, and a bunch of fans and cathodes/lights etc.

EDIT: Maybe if you tell us your specs we could guide you better. I have 2 ide hd's, 2 optical, 3 pci slots used, one ram slot, one amd cpu (single cpu mb), floppy, 2 fans, and 2 usb devices (only one of which uses the comp for power, zip drive) running very well on a Antec True 330. I know you said you want 5xx range, but just offering my 2 cents.

Great minds think alike. I've got a True330 and a Fortron w/120mm fan as well... both are excellent, but I prefer the Fortron because it's quieter. Neither are loud, however.

PC Power and Cooling are the best and the most expensive, Antec enermax Allied and Fortron are right behind. My vote went to the Antec, but I will be upgrading to PC Power and Cooling in the future.

I guess I assumed it was not for the system that already has a 550watt powersupply. And 550 does seem like alot for those specs. Anyways, my vote would go to Antec (since I own one and am happy with it , plus reviews seem to suggest Antec is good in their products ).

Antec is a good power supply, but I think mine runs hot and it's not exactly silent when the temps ramp up

I'm all about the Antec Tru series. I have used them in a few system that I have put together (Mine, my father's, and my best friend's), and all systems have worked flawlessly. As well, the noise levels are very low. You can't ask for more, especially since Antec is one of the most trusted names when it comes to PSUs.
