You're very welcome.

The reason I asked was because if you just look at Brother's spec for extra memory on the HL-1440, all it says was you need 72-pin SIMM with speed of 60-80ns. It doesn't specify EDO or FPM. Both are available in 72-pin SIMM. I'm in no way a memory expert so I don't know the difference between EDO and FPM. Are they definitely non-compatible with each other?

Like you, a lot of people (including my sister) have EDO memory left over from their 486's. It'd be great if they could use that memory in the HL-1440. Just wondering...

I have NO idea what I stuck in MY printer...all I know is that it fits. It's 72pins and it's 16Mb, and it fits fine I would NOT recommend going out and getting 32Mb unless it's like 2-5 bux more...b/c it's hasn't made a bit of diff for the documents that I print on a daily basis I actually have never even printed anything that was larger than 1Mb BTW...the starter drum that it comes with lasts forever! of course, our Toner is low indicator is on (both the Alarm and Data lights blink @ once which means it's the Toner) but we haven't changed it yet...and aren't going to until nothing prints! I'm sure that we've printed WELL over 1000 sheets on this thing, if not 1500. do THAT w/ that PieceofCRAP lexmark!

Glad U ppl see the value in this one hehehehe...it's not a THROWAWAY like the others

I actually don't have any EDO left, what I have are FPMs. I skipped from FPM(486) to SDRAM(PII).

But I know that the socket on the EDO is different. And it may have some voltage differences as well, but I'm sure about that part.

I'm currently working on my wife to let me buy the printer

I actually started to order this thing, thinking it would be really cool to have my own laser printer. But then I started thinking, for $200, and $50 each replacement toner cartridge, is it really worth it? I've been buying Lexmark ink jet printers for $10 after rebates, I could get 20 of them before the cost would equal this thing... every time I run out of ink I buy a new printer, already gone through 3 of them. Well worth it if you ask me. Plus you can dump the used printers to the usual EBay schumcks for some decent coin.

Awesome! I was so mad when I missed out on this deal last time. Actually had it in the cart ready to go last time but I cancelled it at the last second. Was actually going to pick one up at Fry's this weekend for $249. Getting it delivered on Tuesday for $216 Thanks!

I know that this printer has a max of 32MB RAM via a SIMM. All I have laying around is a 64MB stick of EDO. Does anyone know if a 64MB SIMM will still work, even though only 32MB will be used?

Good news... EDO memory works for the HL-1440, as well as FPM. This is from a printers newsgroup.

Don't know if 64MB stick will work. Maybe you can try it out and let us know?

Edit: For the technologically curious, I looked up the difference between EDO and FPM. It turns out that EDO is just a faster version of FPM. EDO is backward compatible to FPM in most cases. One of the main differences is that in FPM, the output buffer is turned off on the rising edge of CAS, whereas in EDO, the output buffer stays on even on the rising edge of CAS, allowing the system to read the buffer while setting up for the next cycle, thus saving a clock cycle per page access. (I guess the fact that the output buffer stays on for longer explains the name "Extended Data Output".)

Read this article if interested.

The bottom line is: "In most cases, EDO will work in systems that were designed to work only with FPM. (...) Most new chipset designs will allow any combination of both technologies (FPM and EDO) to be used."

OK, so I'm simply going to be saying what everyone else says. Maybe the 15th time someone hears it, it'll convince them.

THIS PRINTER RULES. I don't have the $200 to get it myself (at least, I can't permit my self to), but the lab has this sucker there, and boy it's sweet.

Anybody using this printer with linux? according to linuxprinting.org, it "works perfectly," but I know the 1440 doesn't support postscript. I'm thinking of getting it for my small network and running a print server from my linux box. Anyone using it in this capacity?

I've never gotten it to work in Linux, but then again I run Slack 8.0 and didn't install the printing packages. I fooeld around with LPRing and tons of that crap but can't get anything. I never actually verified that the parralel driver was working, so it mgiht be that..

anyways, spent 2 hours on it, and got nowhere. It's my fault though, not the printer Beautiful printer!

Ok I bit the bullet, but I'm not sure it's done.

Can anyone tell me why Omax is saying that I'm not on their delivery area?

I'm in L.A.'s westside. There is an OfficeMax 7 miles away from me.

There are so many businesses around me that traffic is maddening.

So what exactly is their delivery area? Just around their delivery centers?

Do they do that so they don't have to follow their advertised 1-day delivery service?

Is there anybody else receiving this "5-day, may charge you extra for delivery" crap?

They said they were gonna call me first if there is a delivery charge. Boneheads.

P.S.
I'm impatient so I called them. It appears that the extra few miles makes my place off their map.
So they will UPS it... for free. I wonder if they save any money by doing it this way.
Now I remember... last time I ordered from them it took near two weeks to get here, and it also came UPS.
With so many large businesses run like this it's a wonder the economy is still alive.

Gotta pile on. This printer rocks. Manual duplexing with multiple pages so I can fit 100 pages of my class notes on 25! Brother far surpasses my lasst few printers; the HP 6l and the NEC SS870.

I have the 1250 and expanded my memory to 20 MB. I believe the 1440 is a later version of the 1250.
If so, you will not be disappointed. Someone mentioned Lexmark. I looked into it before I purchased
the Brother. A comparable Lexmark had a paper holder and NOT a paper tray. This was absolutely
critical to me, because all the printer at my work with paper holder are jacked-up (grabs multiple pages).
For $200 you can't go wrong. Two thumbs up on this one.

Cool--I just ordered one. I've been using the 1240 for several years now and LOVE it. I'm upgrading because I need a second. Very nice!

hehehe I have to repeat about how dumb this company is.

I just received the printer today. One day delivery! But thru UPS

The thing is that OfficeMax distribuition center, the UPS distribuition center and my place are all within a 35 miles radius.

So UPS got it today and delivered the same day. Gota love it.

BTW thanks iwearnosox[/b] for alerting about this new sale. And thanks to all those who convinced me that this was indeed a good printer.

Just finished printing a 104 page pdf file in under 7 minutes(15ppm), not counting the spooling. If you count the spooling then we have a job done in just under 13ppm, which is still great.

Thanks guys for this great deal But now I need to deal with my other half

PS. Had to edit the mileage after checking it on Mapquest

I am also in need of upgrading my 8 years old 300 dpi, 4ppm, HP LJ 4ML.

I checked the print quality of the Brother 1850 (2400x600 dpi) at Office Depot and compared it with the HP 2200 (1200x1200). While the text quality was nice on both printers, I prefered the halftoning on graphical printouts on the HP. The HP had dense dot half toning like newspaper pics while the Brother had star-shaped/plus-shaped half toning which was less detailed and different from a newspaper pic halftoning. On the other hand, I could only compare the test sheets because I didn't have the audacity of opening up a printer cable package, bringing a cdr with drivers for both printers, and setting up the printers to the store computers for a more uniform print comparison. It could very much be that Brother's print sample was not using a high resolution picture and could have been capable of printing newspaper like halftoning.

In any case, if text is the only criteria, Brother is a good deal. The Brother 1850 is $500 compared to HP 2200 at $800. Also, brother toner is much cheaper. I think it was like $50 or less compared to HPs $100 per toner.

A las, until I find a good comparison between the Brother and the HP, I will be saving up for the costly HP.

rchang713: it works PERFECTLY with Linux, according to Linux printing database. Seems like you only need to install ghostscript driver for it.

I personally wouldn't buy any non-postscript printer. Even my ink jet printer has postscript. Saves you headache in the future.
