anyone even think that maybe this invention is so important, and can improve things so much, that companies (or the government) might want to cover it up before it comes out, so instead he hypes it so it cant just vanish if it doesnt conform with society?

DMage is right. There are hundreds of verified instances where inventions that could have changed the world have been buried by large Corperations. Carburators which could do 80-90 miles to the gallon. Hybred electric motors since the late 60's. Desalination plant concepts that could efficently produce drinkable water from salt-water. All of these things have been bought by large corperations and BURIED. The reason to be excited about this invention is that it has major backing by large names and lots of money. The biggest hurdle this invention faces, if it is some sort of personal transportation, is the corperations paying off government officials to slow regulation changes, therefore making them impossible to fly them in cities.

Whew... ok, rant over... Flame on!

IT is supposedly just a one wheeled scooter. I see some of you have linked some earlier patents of Kamen's where he has patented scooter designs, but there's a newer patent that shows a drawing of a guy standing on a single wheeled scooter. He's been patenting different stages of this thing, it's only a matter of time before it comes to production.

BTW... For those on the "teleporter" kick: If we had the technology now to disassemble matter and transport it to another location and reassemble it... or for that matter, if we had the technology to disassemble matter to a point where it can be categorically arranged, wouldn't we want to use that technology to remove, let's say, cancer cells?

First things first, of course.

divinemartyr wrote the following while high on crack:
...even the hoverboards in Back to the Future II were actual working models made by Mattel. These boards were rejected by parents and seen to be "unsafe"...

Um, I think they may have said that at the end of the movie as a JOKE. Here is the board. Tell me, do you really think this will hover?

Guys... if you watch the making of the movie you will see that the hoverboards are connected to a moving car by a nice strong steel bar that was later edited out for the movie.

Hey Johnny, just thought about this. What if what he made in that office wasnt a full size version? What if it was just a small scale model of what hes designing? Could it be possible that the metro version is a mass trasit transport like our subways but non polluting? And the Pro version is a privately owned version like a personal car?? Just a thought but it would make sense if most of the components were micro scale and he just had to assemble the track layout.

Man anyone know where I could some investing info on this DEKA company?? It could be a worthwhile investment.

I still think there are only three possibilities:

1) It's a hoax. (By far the strongest of the three in my opinion.)
2) It's cold fusion. (The only thing I can imagine that could possibly change the world more
than the Internet, and make more money in 5 years than Bill Gates has.)
3) It's a ridiculously hyped bunch of garbage such as most of the transportation devices described on this thread. A one-wheeled scooter? C'mon! Who's going to change the world and make more than Microsoft with a scooter of any kind? If that's what it is then I refer you back to number 1, because this kind of hype over something like that amounts to nothing more than a hoax.

Dude, he's right, they really were real, I swear. They used magnets. They had to lay down special surfaces underneath to make them work. You couldn't use them in real life unless there were surfaces, so there wasn't a market except for people with as much money as movie studios. I saw a thing about it on TV once.

I think a good question to ask would be to examine the kind of companies that Mr. Kamen is allying himself with . . .

Amazon . . . Apple . . . Xerox. . . . Baxter.

First of all, Baxter is a medical supply company, and Kamen has invented things in the medical field (probably for them) so I think that explains the connection there since they've already stated that it's not a medical device.

Amazon . . . E-commerce, books.

Apple . . . computer, digital content creation.

Xerox . . . office equipment, intellectual property management.

Maybe I'm way off on a limb here, but I don't think it's a mode of transportation at all. What if it were some form of E-book or similar device that replaced paper? Xerox has been working on electronic paper for years; this might explain our interest, as well as the relation to the other two companies.

spamboy:

It's NOT cold fusion, they said so on TV:

You're probably right. But my point is that if it's NOT cold fusion then it's nothing.
There is nothing else within the realm of possibility (if you consider cold fusion within the realm of possibility, which is itself questionable), that could possibly, literally meet the criteria required.

There's certainly nothing mentioned on this thread that meets those requirements. (Teleportation devices and quantum physics fantasies don't count, as they are clearly so far beyond the absurd outer limits of ANY kind of possibility as to be laughable.)

Completely changing the world? More money than Microsoft in 5 years? Baloney. I'm kind of surprised so many people are already suggesting such lowered-expectation devices as one-wheeled scooters.

But I am also giving you guys the benefit of the doubt: I'm choosing to believe that those of you who think it's some kind of bicycle or scooter (and it may be), also recognize what a complete load of crap all this hype is.

Yes, I have to take that as a given in your answers. After all, you are Anandtech readers!

H8Tank was onto something when he posted his link. I dug deeper in that article and apparently there is already a patent request on record for the "power driven stabilization device" i.e. gyroscope. Whaddayathink? A self balancing unicycle? A unicycle would be fun, it would probably look kinda funny, it would assemble easily and would revolutionize the transportation industry. I don't think it's a flight device. Most people can't even drive safely and would be plummeting to their deaths in record numbers. That doesn't sound too safe. My 2 cents. We'll all have to wait and see for sure. I don't think a unicycle would be as influential as the PC though so Bill Gates will be happy.

well, like I said, and the quote said, it could change the way alot of people think about things.

second, teleporters do not dissasemble matter, they copy the information of individual particals. the hardest part is assimmilating all that data into one data stream and processing it (easy for a quantum computer btw), then making sure all atoms are accurately copied.

the original is still alive and kicking after the operation (unless the process of reading them destroys them, but I don't think it does). of course, I don't remember all the details I read about before accurately, so I'm probably off on alot of this..

You're probably right. But my point is that if it's NOT cold fusion then it's nothing.

heh, well I can see you are truly single minded, there are MANY things that meet those criteria, most of which have been mentioned on this thread.

Cold Fusion, who gives a damn, when REAL fusion is about 10 years away anyway.

if the states didn't back out of helping with the next generator, the largest ever, they would have been alot further along, and would have ended up with a larger reactor, however the one they are building according to the results they have achieved so far, will be self sustaining

Teleportation devices are NOT that far off. they HAVE 'teleported' things already, but really, like I said above, the majority of scientists in the world are working for companies on specific projects. this could be just one company that was doing real work on devices that are based on Quantum Physics.

what we have heard so far, and what is reality, can easily be two things. you thought the government was the only one who did that? maybe you should read up on a little thing called competition, and why giving information out freely will screw you over.

more money the MS in 5 years? no problem, have you any idea how HUGE the Automotive and Oil industries are? the internet is PUNY compared to them.

One more thing. So what if AnandTech readers let their imaginations fly? OctoberBlue seems a bit too smug and I think he/she touches themself!

Why would cities be designed around a unicycle? I haven't seen any cities designed around bicycles.
