My guess would be--he helped refine the fuel cell technology for public use.

Using fuel cell technology in vehicles:

--Emissions become a non-issue
--Lighter weight vehicles(800+lbs of engine/transmission/drive train not required)
--Reduced frame weight(loss of another 800+ lbs easy) due to loss of excess engine/transmission support weight.
--Increased safety - lighter vehicles mean less weight carrying momentum into an accident
--Space age materials used for the frame/body/safety equipment(extremely light)
--Reduced vehicle size
--Refill fuel tank with tap water (no more evil oil burning)
--a fully electric vehicle could easily be converted to hover technology if the power was high enough and the weight reduced enough/both possible with fuel cell technology...

This news was released at the same time a major car company announced plans for fuel cell vehicles around 2004. All this seems related to me...

The guy also does work with Stirling engings, so my guess is it's a Stirling engine powered Individual Transport. IT would require cities to be rearchitected because they no longer will have cars but these clean and efficient IT's.
my 4cents...

I am not too sure if "instant transportation" or any form of teleporting will ever be release to public. Military stratedgists or Pentagon may not allow it, don't you think?

I just wouldn't want to wear those glasses that see through clothes all the time...I sure as hell don't want to see anyone on this board naked...no offense...but we are all nerds.

You all do realize that right? We're all nerds...especially everyone on this thread. I'm a good looking nerd...but I don't know about you all...so I won't be taking my chances with any "see-through" glasses. I might go blind...You never know...it could happen.

Of course I'm just kidding around...

How could it be a type of transportation device?

1) If it is a tranportation device such as the design of a wheelchair, what are us Canadians going to do in the Winter with one?
2) How would you take anyone with you, if it fit into 2 dufflebags and a cardboard box. I doubt that one be big enough to hold two adults and a few kids
3) There are already plenty of transportation devices like this... it would take a long time for this to catch on, not to mention how much pressure they would get from the car companies and the gas companies. They'd never be able to bring it out, they'd be broke from being sued before it ever hit the market

Could be like one of those little mini cars that folds up and gets put into a briefcase... but this one would be solar or nuclear powered and possibly hover instead of have wheels?
Who knows... should be interesting to find out tho... OR...

Hence the secrets... if you keep something like that secret and then all of a sudden release it by the thousands what are they gonna do to stop ya? You are about to get caught... just teleport your arse outta there!
lol

IT might be a virtual reality machine that lets you visit places without really going anywhere. This will explain the retrofitting, but then it would be very hard to put together in 10 minutes unless a lot of it was preassembled. So maybe it is a personal transporter, which seems to be a popular opinion.

It's probably going to be a transporter

He stole the idea from the movie The Fly.... lol

Imagine never being late to class or work. Just wake up and step into your own transporter and poof, you're at work! No car pollution, no traffic, unless your DNA gets mixed up with someone elses during transport... LOL

It's got to be a new form of energy. The biggest concerns are coporations. Well, most corporations that have the ability to put that kind of snag into things are the energy powers. Just imagine what would happen if he developed an energy source that could replace oil? That would radically change the world and put a lot of companies out of buisness. The scary part is what it could do to global economy. If he has a power source that doesn't require the job force that oil does, it would put millions of people out of jobs worldwide and dramatically turn the tables on world politics. No one would care about the middle east anymore...

Should be very interesting whatever it is.

Ion Transformer?

SSP, well answer this, how can I fly into the hype without IT?! Hmmmmm smarty pants?! :|

REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING:

In a private meeting with Bezos, Jobs and Doerr, Kamen assembled two Gingers ? or ITs ? in 10 minutes, using a screwdriver and hex wrenches from components that fit into a couple of large duffel bags and some cardboard boxes.

Explain how he could make a fuel cell or transporter in 10 minutes from stuff in a duffel bag.

My guess is that it is some kind of personal vehicle- like a scooter gone insane that can maybe hover (maybe something like a fuel cell would be prebuilt so he just had to hook it together?). I dunno, I guess we'll have to wait!

Why doesn't he just patent the damn thing and tell us what the friggin thing is!

OK...

anyone who actually believes that there's even the slightest possibility that this could be a transporter (a la Star Trek) is delusional. Science has a LONG way to go before something like that is even remotely possible.

It's either some sort of clean power source or a new kind of vehicle.

<<...Jobs is quoted as saying: ?...If enough people see the machine you won?t have to convince them to architect cities around it. It?ll just happen...>>

<<...The invention has a fun element to it, because once a Ginger was turned on, Bezos started laughing his ?loud, honking laugh"...>>

A teleporter takes two machines, not one, also the effect happens when the machine is "turned on".

I completely agree with the previous post. There is no way in hell that it's some sort of transporter. That's a nice fantasy for Star Trek lovers such as myself, but reality? No way.

A new energy source is likely, but a vehicle of some sort is always possible. Odds are though that we are all wrong and it will be something we haven't even considered.

I vote for Internet Tinker-Toys.

Well, lets see, it has the following characteristics that we know:

1. Fairly large.
2. Fairly easy to put together.
3. It is funny (looking?) because Bezos laughed real hard when he saw it.
4. They aren't sure if they will be allowed to use it.
5. Cities will be designed around it.
6. It will sweep over the WORLD.
7. It will muck around with some billion dollar industries.
8. It will be a huge success with Kamen surpassing Billy G. within 5 years.

What can we infer from this information?

Fuel cell is out because I would hope that a fuel cell isn't so big that you need a few duffle bags and a cardboard box to carry it- plus, how do you put it together with only some wrenches and a screw driver?!

Star Trek transporter idea is pure bull sh!t- I can't believe anyone would actually mention that, it really proves how gullible you really are- no offense but it's true.

Hmmm...

I'm wit Zeppy and Zippy here.. If it's a fuel cell, or a personal transportation device.. he could have had the fuel cell in the cardboard box.. and wrenched and screwed the very light aluminum alloy frame together.. the only thing is.. how are us canadians gonna use it in the winter? Someone else already stated this.. eh? Nobody ever thinks about us... If it is some sort of a replacement to oil.. then I would understand the secrecy.. I wouldn't want the whole middle east coming down on my ass!!! Not to mention the American Govn.. no thanks! But then again, it could just be a hoax, why would Jobs be interested? He's a pusher of Totalitarian machines.. is he not? Maybe it's something from "Brave New World" or .. something.. dare I say "Bladerunner?"..
and about us all being nerds.. I'm a good looking nerd too
