it very well may be a robot of some sort programmed w/ artificial intelligence. think about it. it wasnt but a few months ago that Yamaha or Casio (i dont exactly remember who) made that little robotic pet dog. they made two models just like this Ginger project. one sold in the U.S. for about $200 at places like Kay Bee Toys. i had a very limited bag of tricks and functions. then there is the one released in Japan (i dont know if its coming to the states) which costs at least $2,000. it runs on a CPU w/ capabilities 20 times greater than that of today's PC processors using artificial intelligence to make decisions and respond to voice, infrared optics, and other sensory devices. so maybe this Ginger project is something similar, only maybe it will be business/household/recreational robot of some sort.

Sunny129,

Yes but they said there would be cities that can be built around them. Maybe AI but in a different way. Perhaps it is AI but it would be designed as the central "mind" of the city to regulate things and it would place the business of basic maintenance out....

Don't question me on this post. Me tired.

Ok, now here is my serious attempt to guess.

It's an eletrical bicycle with rotating blades, an ET like device.

Reasoning:
The guy loves helicopters.
What's the connection between universities and city planning? Bicycles are a major factor in Universities.
Why is it fun? Bicycles are fun.
It will replace something dirty and dangerous. Cars
10 minutes to assemble? Some alluminum arms attached to a bicycle.
Loud honking laugh? ET phone home, toot toot.
Metro and Pro? This is about lo-co-mo-tion. Come on baby ....

Either that or it's a flying chair....hmmmm

After reading it over and over again and doing some additional research, I have to say that it's got to b some sort of vehicle. Likely a hovercraft based on magnets of some sort, but of course that is just another guess. The key here is that if it is some sort of new vehicle, it doesn't run on oil. Still a major impact to the world.

Holy Sh$t! Cold fusion! (Note I'm not reading all 6 pages of posts)

Alpha IVT: "can't be teleportation, your cells would disintegrate and the process of "reviving" them at another location is impossible."

read up on quantum mechanics man

I'm going with a version of what Sunny suggested. A robot but with a highspeed wireless link for control. A virtual reality setup for your computer and no more reason to commute into work.

Just plug/link into the right robot when you need a presence at work.

AI has been around for decades...the problem is, whenever we come up with something that fits the description of AI, people say, well that's not AI, we understand that. Trust me, he didn't invent some AI.

I doubt it's a hovercraft. Those have already been invented, but were found to be impossible to keep stable, difficult to drive in a straight line, inefficient, and of course, very difficult to stop.

Here's a hint guys, this guy is way ahead of his time, and he doesn't usually work on problems that anyone else has spent much time on (unless a company hires him to do so). So if there is already a lot of research in that area, you know it's not what he came up with. This invention of his was obviously one of his personal projects, not one made for a company - he always has some weird research (funded by himself) going on, on the side, while big corporations hire him to solve their problems.

The guy likes helicopters, but that doesn't mean he's inventing something like a helicopter. I like strawberries, but if I invent something it's not likely that it will be a better strawberry.

Quantum physics applied to consumer devices? Gee, I don't think so. An incredible effort in environmental control and the development of the observational paradigm is required to even detect the physical signs that hint at the physics of these entities, much less find a practical application for them. Sandia reports being at the one-transistor stage of realization, and even then not all observers agree about what it is that's being observed.

Teleportation and anti-gravity? Uh, not even in the conceptual stages. Science fiction, or perhaps fantasy is more appropriate. Unless you're referring to some rather limited field effects which, again, have no pragmatic application for personal transportation devices, anti-gravity is a bust. Disregarding the power requirements for something of this nature, think of the dangers the technology would entail. Magnetism is not gravity, BTW, so the idea of the way Mag-Levs work having anything at all to do with "anti-gravity" is null and void. Magnetic repulsion for lift / field crawl for propulsion, eh faintly possible, but definitely requiring external power sources, as with Mag-Levs. As for teleportation, the matter of whether you beam "someone" in the form of the energy equivalence of his body (not to mention system state, for you sysadmins out there) or whether you just send the instructions to another device whose job it is to "assemble" his doppelganger in another location, the energy requirements for that transmission are -- significant. I've seen estimates that place the power requirement at a figure which would be a significant percentage of the sum total of energy produced by all human-constructed power plants throughout history. Besides, what do you do with the poor schmuck left behind? This would simply amount to a high energy physics version of cloning, with all of the attendant legal and ethical questions. It's not transportation, it's reproduction.

Flying / hovering? Consider the energy requirements. Though this would be an infinitely less formidable task than teleporting someone or negating the gravitational influnece of our planet, we're still talking about a requirement that's at least an order of magnitude greater than any portable power production device yet devised. It's conceivable that very strong and very light weight materials will be developed that will make production of ultra-light sailplanes with sink rates in "still" air low enought that the average daytime thermal lift coefficients will make sustainable daylight soaring possible, without any need to look for thermals or ridge lift. With the inclusion of light weight solar powered propulsion systems with light weight storage cells we could have relatively low speed general aviation devices coming some day that required no fuel. For general use? Not without VERY reliable automatic controls -- and good weather. (For those of you who fly hang gliders, did you ever try to loft yourself with a wing that was too large and too light for the wind conditions, given your body weight? And we're talking about a device which weighs MUCH less than the hang gliders in current use. It is very embarrassing to wind up hanging in your harness on a wing which has been inverted on the top of the launch hill. Ask me how I know.) Most people are not safe automobile operators. Placing same persons at the controls of aircraft? I hope not in my lifetime.

And as for one particular iteration of this type of personal transport, personal propellors / rotors? This is supposed to replace something dangerous? Can you say Cuisine-Art?

If we assume that the article provided an accurate description of the behaviors of the participants in the meeting, and that we have not been misled as to the basic exclusions as to what this device is, then I agree that this is very likely to be a form of transportation. This thing is an invention, not a major breakthrough in the basic physical sciences but, instead, a breakthrough in a technological application of already known principles. It must have no obvious counterpart in the common experience. Does anyone besides me think that it's probably man-powered? I'm guessing a pantographic device with stilts / legs, or a unicycle (okay, perhaps with outriggers of some kind) with the occupant located in the center of the wheel. If such a device were efficient enough, it could certainly replace most or all other single-occupant vehicles for city use. If it has a practical power source other than human muscle, and sells for $2,000, I'll be really amazed.

Good morning America dug up his patent. Its a personal scooter designed around one large tire. Very simple concept, but dorky appearance. I don't think its ground breaking.

No way in hell, Madrat. What are you talking about? Steve Jobs would never get involved in a project that takes half a decade to unveil a one-tire scooter.

If he already had the patent on this device, there'd be no need for secrecy. All information would be out in the open. Patenting a product in development is somewhat of a double-edged sword.

I would guess he hasn't patented it, and is making anyone who sees it sign some rather hefty non-disclosure agreements.

backWERD, you mean a robot version of jonnyGURU or Windogg?

Anyway, folks don't forget this:

It is said to be a MACHINE- fsck AI and quantum physics for this one.
Two models- Metro and Pro!! C'mon- metro- it is a damn good chance that means transportation!

One wheeled scooter- lol, no, I don't think a company would need hundreds of engineers to play catch up to him (as he said they would which is why he isn't making his invention public) for a one wheeled scooter.

It's either a hoax or some kind of cold-fusion generator. This would explain retro-fitting cities for it (as opposed to other forms of power generation). The humorous part could be anything, ie: just the fact that it was real and actually worked could've caused a sort of astonished, euphoric laughter; or IT could've been set up in such a way that something humorous was produced on purpose to lighten the mood in the room.

Some of you people are really smart. My head hurts with all this Physics talk... its why I left college damnnit. I think it is some form of transportation... most of you will agree.... name Metro and Pro(well not so much) sound awfully transportery to me.

I don't know... a one-wheeled scooter could be pretty complex, particularly if it was to be elegant and efficient in operation.

Someone said a single large wheel. In my earlier post I was thinking along the lines of the operator being in an enclosed (or semi-enclosed) space inside the wheel. The issues of control and low-speed balance, as well as friction control could be pretty impressive obstacles to the production of such a machine. It's exactly the sort of object that would have been impossible to design just a few years ago due to materials limitations, and possible now because of recent advances made in fabrication capabilities. It's also the kind of vehicle the appearance of which might very well startle someone into laughter. I know that the idea tickles me!

Regards,
Jim

How about your own personal helicopter, like a jetpack....that would be cool. Or, I saw something recently, which was called a Hovverboard......ya know, just like the thing skateboard on back to the future. Apparently, this is possible now.

All this talk and theories(although very well thought out) I feel we are not even close to what the invention really is. There are many points that have lead to my conclusion; the fact that they put up numbers with the amount of revenue this product can make! They are talking about breaking records, making more than Microsoft's total networth in half the time(5 years).

Its obvious that its a mode of transportation, its obvious that its a device, and it doesn't use outrageous expensive technology(teleportation or Quantum physics) that would cost a fortune to produce. This has to be ground breaking to science as well as revolutionary to meet their "claims" that this invention would change the world in a dramatic level they described. To me this cannot be some simple one wheeled invention or a human powered unicycle. It cannot be something of conventional transportation either such as a hovercraft or a helicopter. To be honest it has to be something new. If it was something simple or similar to something that exists, would anyone buy a book(mind you, its just a book, no manufacturing techniques or patents) on it for $250,000? I don't think so.

Obviously I have no idea what it is, but if this product exists, it has to be really ingenius.
