Yeah. I would have liked to see them tell how much it would have cost to repair the damage they did.

was that a sanded down brake duct on the ferrari?

wonder how much a windshield on a 458 costs. doesn't show up on safelite lol

i bet that paella was delicious

According to this site - http://www.trutlands.com/index.php?cPath=35 - windshields for recent model Ferraris (not as recent as the 458, though!) are in the $2,000-4,000 range.

I know my insurer, USAA, will replace a damaged windshield for free, with no deductible. I imagine they would do the same for a Ferrari, which they will insure (for laughs I just ran a quote estimate to add a 458 Spyder to my existing cars, a 2006 330i and 2002 M3 - it bumped my 6-month premium by about $1,800).

Fair, but obviously the current 911 Turbo is at the very end of its production.

Actually I think they've got the new one in production, so it'd have been the newest car there. They could've even gone with the S to make it a more even playing field.

Er, nevermind they don't have the Turbo Cabriolet yet.

I really liked the ep this week - the Mercedes test was really interesting, and I was laughing out loud, a lot, at the Hovervan segment.

I got bored with the first episode. It appears 2-4 are out now. Was it ep3 you guys were praising? I feel like watching one.

Yeah it was a bit odd, it came off kinda subdued, both them driving the Black and the electric drive, but maybe it was due to the cars. The Black being very focused and not the insane melding of the SL Black with the tail-out SLS, and the Electric Drive being good, although I was surprised they lauded instead of knocking the quietness since its a supercar (I think they muted wind and tire and even motor noise, and the hum Mercedes came up with actually would lull me to sleep more than the silence would I think).

I'd really be interested in seeing what they'd say about the Model S (I often wonder if Elon Musk wasn't a large part of their derision for Tesla). I know Tesla probably won't do it but maybe a private buyer would.

I have to say I think I prefer the blue chrome look, although I actually do enjoy the searing yellow with black wheels (the grille especially looks better on the blue I think). (Chris Harris driving it) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IElqf-FCMs8

I was actually kinda disappointed in that segment for some reason, just came off a bit too "staged", like it went exactly as they scripted with no real ad libing. The episode felt short too, and I didn't even skip the guest which I sometimes do.

3 is probably the best but I don't think any of them are really great. Just ok solid old style Top Gear mostly. 1, 3, and 4 I think are the most watchable. I don't even remember 2 other than it having the motorcyle vs parkour thing.

that hovervan episode sucked. after the mercedes segment, pure drivel.

the one good line from the hovervan:
"why don't we just paint a sign that says 'sorry'"

I thought the caravan segment could have benefitted from some editing, but it definitely had its moments.

I was really happy to see the Singer 911 (maybe the most overall-desirable car in the world, to my sensibilities) featured, but I wish they hadn't blended that together with the 991 segment, because I'd like to see each of them discussed fully.

As for the Sesto Elemento - holy moly! I have taken to more or less ignoring the Lambo limited editions because most of them just seem silly (the Veneno is a hideous joke IMO, especially compared to the P1 and LaFerrari). I had no idea they had made a 2,200-pound Gallardo-based track beast. I do think the $3M price tag is stupid, but I fully understand that the sheikhs who buy these things will cheerfully pay a huge premium for exclusivity, and it does seen like a very special car. It was a real treat to see it hooned like that.

That Sesto Elemento was ridiculous. Love the fact that it has no seats and only cushions at certain points on the body to keep you from falling apart lmao awesome

Top Gear in dustup over alleged staged hovercraft scene

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/07/29/top-gear-staged-hovercraft-fake-video-controversy/

Top Gear walks a very narrow line between documentary, sitcom and reality television. And while some aspects of it are true, it shouldn't be a huge shock that there are plenty of staged elements. Still, there seem to be elements of the British public that think everything shown on the telly is true, which makes the latest controversy over Top Gear's fakery seem rather silly to us.

The anger stems from the July 21 episode, which actually airs tonight on BBC America (spoiler alert from here out), where Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May attempt to convert a Ford Transit into a hovercraft. The resulting hovervan can work on the road, and can kind of work on the water, as demonstrated during an extended cruise on the River Avon.

This is where people are getting angry. In one scene, the trio pass a riverside restaurant and decided to stop in for a bite. Patrons sitting on the water's edge are then mercilessly blown and splashed by the jet wash of the hovervan's fans. Here's the controversy – those "patrons" were apparently staged actors. Yes, Top Gear is in trouble with the British public because they used actors for a segment rather than ruining the days of unsuspecting people.

Video and images were released on Twitter by one of the actors, according to Britain's The Mirror. A BBC spokesperson's response to this latest uproar is pretty much what we were thinking as we watched the episode last weekend: "I think Top Gear viewers are intelligent enough not to have been taken in." Clearly not all of them. Check out video of the stunt below.

And I thought the hovervan episode was properly LOL worthy. Maybe I'm turning daft.

With the close to 600HP and 1t of weight, while having 4WD, that thing is probably as close as you can get to a non-scary, comfy group B car, power-to-weight-ratio-wise.
Too bad that Lambo didn't get it homologated for the street.

FYI, there is some great Sesto Elemento bonus footage, including comments by James and Jezza (who makes fun of the engineers for the plastic windows), at http://transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2013/07/30/video-behind-the-scenes-with-the-sesto-elemento/. I was hoping, given Clarkson's height, that they would explain how the "seat" and/or pedals are adjusted to accommodate drivers of different sizes, but no such luck.

Actually, on a related note, since Clarkson is 6'5", it appears to me the current (by far the fastest) Stig, who is standing right next to him in this video, is not much below 6' - maybe 5'10" or 5'11"? Still seems too short to be David Coulthard unless he has always exaggerated his height (which some men certainly do).
