After changing character from Alchemist to Vanquisher(and difficulty from easy to hard), the game was a lot more fun!!!
I initially was making a Bowazon like build with only 1 point in the freezing arrow skill. I had an excellent bow(Nomad Zapping Bow of Ice?) I was using that did 75 dmg and doing LOTS of critical hits with only a level 3-5 requirement up until I was level 10-12 or so. Then something happened. I saw an enchant shrine and decided to use it for the first time. It downgraded my bow and took the ice dmg off. My great Bow was now suddenly completely worthless. That was the first time I ever visited an enchant shrine, and I never visited one after that. That, in combination with me finding a rare single hand pistol with a level 10 requirement that did 175 dmg and had LOTS of critical hits/damage/flee/life/mana leech modification led to the death of a possible Bowazon build and brought life to my Trapassin build. I think I used that gun until level 22 or so when I found a rare shotgun that did 3xx dmg. I later found the Tsar cannon(5xx dmg, wow!) and equipped it as soon as I was eligible(level 28) to and that's still my current weapon at Level 38.
I was blasting everything away and never experienced any real challenge until fighting the boss Krag(or whatever his name is) at the lava stage. I still didn't die, but it gave me quite a challenge and I kept on asking Jesus, when the fook is he going to die...Until I discovered the people healing him at different corners of the room.
I blasted away at everything putting only 1 skill point in Flame and Flechette trap until the last level to the boss and spent 20 skill points like crazy. I maxed both Flechette and lightning traps to 10 each. I still have 20+ skill points to use remaining.
Maybe it's just me, but the lightning trap doesn't seem all that great. I only use it when fighting those champion monsters and game bosses.
My general strategy is put 2 Flechette traps, summon 5 Skeletons. If there are tons of monsters and/or uniques, add 2 Lightning trap, the trap that reduces defense/armor, and raising Zombies.
The game got increadibly harder for some reason when I reached Mirror Palace.
Those female elve things that can raise enslaved skeletons and do those 6-8 poison missile attack. I had 1,300+ HP and that missile attack brings it down to about 400HP even with 102 poison elemental absorb. That was when I discovered resistances in the game were based on numbers and NOT percentages like in Diablo. Fail. After that I removed all my crap "resist" gear(An armor that provided +50 to all resist but only had 20 defense or so) and went for better/more useful stats on equipment. Elemental resist is completely useless in this game IMO.
I'm a bit pissed that I didn't discover that I could buy dungeon maps sooner from that lady until I got to Mirage palace. I could have leveled up much faster than I did.
I did a lot of fishing in the beginning and gave my pet a glob jelly which did absolutely nothing besides turning him into a jelly. I didn't feed him again until Mirage palace and saw him turn into a mimic...pretty cool. I still have lots of fish to try too!
They seriously need to increase stash size!!!
I've created a gem mule, and item mule that has items I can use in case I want to start a Barbarian build. Also, maybe it's just me but it seems like I was finding 4x more magical items than I was with my Alchemist build...All I had was a total of +2 find more items from equipments earlier in the game. My Alchemist is still stuck at Level 12 and might not see me play him to end. I think I only saw 1-2 orange items with my Alchemist. Before I had reached that same level with my Vanquisher, I had seen 10+!
The more difficult part of the game:
Phase portals.
The NPC's portal in town.
Level 30-??? dungeon maps.
Mirrage palace and every floor after it.
Everything else in the game on "hard" was a freaking joke(yes, I said it) even without me taking advantage of dungeon maps like other people are/have.
All in all, it was an excellent game and clearly worth the $10 I paid for it and the $20 MSRP. I would like to play using the Barbarian, However I don't have the time to start this game again with another character or very hard difficulty setting because I have to install and play other steam games I bought. Time is of the essence.
I've never played Rome: Total War, Bioshock, Stalker, Mass Effect, Morrowind, Freedom Force, and Defense Grid.
All these things are just to serve as a hold over for me until DNF's release.
