Whenever I start to download torrents my connection jus dies completly. This includes programs like bittorrent as well as world of warcraft background downloaders. The only way to fix this is to restart my computer. Any idea?

I'm not sure how to configure WoW torrenting, but in your torrent program you need to cap your speed. I recommend allowing only up to a max of 70% or so of your max upload speed. If other people are on your connection or you want to use it while downloading you're going to want to have it lower than that. Even a 6-10k/sec upload speed allows downloads of 150+k/s. When you upload at near your max rated speed, your internet tends to be VERY slow, downloads very slow, disconnects, etc. Another thing to consider is the number of concurrent connections that your router can handle. With torrents left uncapped, you might be conected to several hundred peers. Depending on your router this might be too much and cause the common dead connection. So I'd cap it pretty low, say 50-75 connections, then work a little higher if your internet is still ok.

Generally by capping the upload speed fairly low and the connections low, your connection will be much more usable.

are you running XP with SP2?
if so, $10 says you're getting this error in your event viewer:

TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts.

fvckin thing is pissing me off and nothing will fix it permanently. although what i don't quite understand is that rebooting my dsl modem fixes it temporarily.

Most of the time that happens because your upload speed is uncapped. I learned this first hand when my brother was seeding a file without an upload cap. As far as anyother device was concerned (my other computers or XBOX), the internet appeared to be down.

My download speed is capped at 45 but never goes higher than 20 which is another problem. I have opened all ports for bittorrent and wow but still kills my connection.

What router are you using? The Linksys WRT54G is known to have problems with P2P apps.

Limit the number of active torrents. Having to many can cripple a PC's netwok connection.

Also try lowring the number of concurrent connecitons.

Does your isp happen to have a limit on simultanious connections? Mine has a limit of 250 connections, and I think they get a certain time out time even if they're not active. So basically, I cant use any form of p2p because of the number of connections p2p produces. I'm lucky if I even get a torrent to start, and go higher then 1kb per second.

As well as capping your upload spead (I never give more than 20%) you also need to reduce the concurrent connections.

Some people don't realise that Azereus defaults to crazy settings that might be fine for an enterprise class router, but will kill the average SOHO router.

Its common. Your bandwith/connections don't get maxed out but bittorrent has so many disconnects/connects in a second that your router starts to heat up and flake out. It has nothing to do with bandwith or anything like that. I had an old linksys router which would great and i was always connected. I went with that free linksys router that vonage has and my connection started to flake out when i used bittorent. My advice would be just to get a better router. linksys wrt54g would be a good example where you can get better firmware from someone other than linksys. Soon im gonig to have to run my vonage router to a new router because mine is still flaking about a couple times a week and i just have to reset the router.
