Why not call a doc and ask if you need to be seen immediately.

If it's really bad/unbearable, ER.

What did you do to your ankle? Did you just roll it? I did that to my ankle a while back and my doctor told me that I tore some ligaments in there but I did not have to do anything for it. I just wore an air cast for awhile with crutches

I heard and felt a snap/pop where I've been having a little trouble lately. It wasn't a roll. The doctor said my description over the phone sounded like a very strained ligament, or a torn/ruptured tendon.

When I first hurt my ankle, I went to the ER cause my ankle was swelling up to about twice it's normal size. X-Rays showed nothing, so we knew it wasn't bone damage. After going through 2 doctors, the first of which was a mountebank, and 2 MRI's (the mountebank managed to lose the first one), I ended up with the second, an ankle specialist, who actually knew what he was talking about. After he sent me for the MRI, that was the second one, he said it showed damage to my achilles tendon, and the cartilage padding in my socket. I had surgery for removing the debris on my achilles, and fixing the partial tear. I may need another surgery for the cartilage, but hopefully not (even if I need it, it will not be as serious because the achilles tendon surgery required an ~4 inch incision, while the other one can be done orthroscopically).

Most likely, if any X-Ray doesn't show a broken bone, you will be sent for an MRI, then physical therapy or scheduled for surgery depending on the severity. In my case, they sent me to physical therapy first, which did nothing, so thats when they scheduled the surgery for me.

Most ankle specialists (around me at least) are run on a 2 week backlog (it's really sad, even when you come in for an appointment that is scheduled, its a 2 hour wait), but if you can settle for the time being for a general orthopedist, and then go to a specialist later, you can probably be seen within 5 days.

My roommate did something that sounded like what you did, he strained some ligaments. They had him on an air splint and crutches. He ended up being alright after about 2-3 weeks.

Swelling is normal. My roommate's dad is a doctor and he said theres no point in going to the emergency room until morning when the swellling comes down a little. Until then i would keep it iced and elevated.

I'm kinda proud of the swelling. It's rather.. large.

as long as you are staying off of it, keeping it elevated and such, you should be okay.

I sprained my ankle a few weeks ago and the doctor said to ice it until the swelling went down, then use heat on it because the heat helps heal better.

It might be a bit different with a torn ligament, though.

Wrapping it will reduce the blood flow and thus reduce the swelling, if it's bothering you that much.

Just do what I did and laze around watching movies all day until you can get to the doctor

A torn ligament/tendon is quite different than spraining a joint.

The swelling went down, and where the swelling was, there is now a big lump of hard stuff.

You don't really want to reduce blood flow IF it is torn/stretched/strained ligaments. Ligaments have a very poor bloodsupply to begin with. That's why these type of injuries take longer to heal.

If it is torn ligaments, not to much can be done to fix it. At least that's what they told me when I tore up my shoulder.
