Selling my rig in the sig below to upgrade. I'm torn between some video card options. I think the highest I would go for now is a X1950XT 256 version. I may buy a 19" LCD monitor for 1280x1024 gaming at the most.

I found a deal to get a 7900 GS for $99.00, but before that I was going to get a X1950XT 256MB. I've researched and saw the 7900 GS cards are great over clockers. Would an overclocked 7900 GS be capable of reaching the performance area for a 7950 GT or possibly a x1950xt? I was waiting for the 8600 series to come out, and it was very lackluster.

For $99.00, that 7900 GS is looking great to go in a Brisbane or Allendale OC build. What do you guys think is the best bang for my bucks playing in 1024x768 or 1280x1024? I do like to crank up the AA and AF.

7900GS $99.00 and OC it
7950GT $169.99
x1950xt $169.99

the overclocked gs probably won't reach up to the 7950gt or the x1950. i would get the x1950 if money isn't a problem

The 7950 has 4 more pixel shaders and twice the video mem, not to mention it starts out clocked higher than a 7900gs. You can't match it by just OC'ing the 7900gs. The x1950xt is even faster, about on the same level as a 7900gtx, so forget about matchig that with a 7900gs.

I think I'll give the 1950xt a shot. I've never used ATI cards for any of my builds always been an AMD/Nvidia fanboy. This card for $169.99 after mail in rebates is the kind of performance I thought the 8600 GT/GTS cards would provide but with DX 10 capabilities.

BTW munky I've seen a lot of people leaving bad reviews cause of the 2d speeds lol!
Cracks me up!

check fs/ft forum or ebay, if you don't mind a used card. i picked up a 7900gs on ebay last week for $95 shipped.

also consider the x1900gt and xt, x1950 pro, and 7900gt. maybe even like a 7800gtx.

You can always go for $126 X1950Pro

X1950XT 256 is the fastest out of all those cards.

Check out this quick review April 2007 digest at DigitTimes

It compares:

PCI-E-ATI RADEON X1950 PRO 256MB GDDR3 1.4ns (580/1400 MHz)
PCI-E-ATI RADEON X1950 PRO 256MB GDDR3 1.2ns (635/1480 MHz)
PCI-E-ATI RADEON X1950 PRO 512MB GDDR3 1.4ns (573/1360 MHz)
PCI-E-ATI RADEON X1900 XT 256MB GDDR3 1.2ns (625/1450 MHz)
PCI-E-ATI RADEON X1900 XT 512MB GDDR3 1.2ns (625/1450 MHz)
PCI-E-ATI RADEON X1900 XTX 512MB GDDR3 1.1ns (650/1550 MHz)
PCI-E-ATI RADEON X1950 XTX 512MB GDDR4 0.9ns (650/2000 MHz)
PCI-E-ATI RADEON X1950 XT 512MB GDDR4 0.9ns (625/1800 MHz)
PCI-E-NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 256MB GDDR3 1.4ns (450/1320 MHz)
PCI-E-NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 256MB GDDR3 1.4ns (480/1400 MHz)
PCI-E-NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS 256MB GDDR3 1.4ns (540/1500 MHz)
PCI-E-NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT 512MB GDDR3 1.4ns (550/1400 MHz)
PCI-E-NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT 256MB GDDR3 1.4ns (600/1430 MHz)

Given this many variations of memory size and clock speeds, you can guage if it's worth it to spend extra for X1950XT 256mb over the other choices you are considering.
