Torrents and College

I know many people at various colleges who think nothing of using Torrents, Limewire, etc. (and even a few who leech off of a massive DC++ hub at their school).

I'm just wondering if I wanted... you know.... Linux distributions, or open source music, if I would be able to use torrents at Harvard without anyone really caring. I wouldn't be stupid, I would limit the upload to 10-20% of my max, and not run it too often, and I really am not too afraid of outside intervention. I'm just wondering how strict their policy against it was.

(I read a bit on internet usage, and the main thing they were restricting was hacking/unauthorized access of school materials, and there is NO way I would ever get into that.)

Anyway, anyone have an opinion?

DC++ wins. Nothing better than downloading some files at 11MB/s. I still torrented, but not excessively. Better watch your back I thinks.

And don't be such a dickwad, upload and share. At least let the ratio to 1.0.

Normally the only problem you run into is if they have a bandwidth limit.

ie. UIUC was 700mb up/down per 24 hours, VT is 600mb up/unlimited down, etc.

k. I'll check that with a linux distro or something the first day or so, depending on roommate consent.

edit: (wtf though, i upload way more than 2 gigs and download around 3-4 gigs a day if im downloading at all)

More than likely they have "packetshaping" implemented and you won't be able to use torrents anyway.

That's what I was thinking.

Anyway, I would of course be testing with some legal stuff first, and usage would be minor.
I'd be more worried about going on DC++, seeing as I've heard of hubs getting busted.

(Yeah, I'm definitely going to think over torrent usage while I'm there too. It isn't worth getting kicked out, but if the risk is almost zero, then it might become worth it. I was thinking of letting a roommate/friend/acquaintance test the waters first.)

uh, when I was at Uni, that was really the only source of the problem. The Uni didn't give a crap what you did, until a company or the RIAA/MPAA complained to them that they had an IP address which was downloading stuff illegally.

Then the University stepped in.

I'm still iffy about PG2, since they just seem to block everything remotely related to any company or government. Its a bit paranoid for me...

I haven't been caught at home, downloading hugely popular torrents from public trackers, so now that I'm mainly on private trackers, I would say the risk is even less....
