Torrents are very slow for some reason...

Actually, I'm not sure if it is torrents specifically.

I'm trying to download the World of Warcraft client (which works like torrents) on a friends laptop at their parents house, but it is painfully slow. Ridiculously so. It only downloads at around 50k/sec which is just god awful. The rest of the internet runs great, so I don't know why it does that. I turned off the firewall on the laptop and set the laptop's IP to be the DMZ server, but neither of them helped.

Another thing to note is that while the WoW downloader runs it bogs the entire internet down. So it runs nice and fast, but as soon as I start using 50k/sec on this download the entire network goes to crap? That makes no sense to me.

Any ideas? I'm going to head over to a McDonalds a bit later and see if their wifi works for it, but I'd like to get this network fixed if I can, too.

unfortunately the wow downloader doesn't cap the upload speed or allow you to customize it's connection speeds. That is most likely the cause of the entire network going to crap. Some routers can't handle the amount of open connections the bittorrent has open at once which causes some routers to stop working altogether.

Wireless and bittorrent don't mix. Connect it with a wire if it isn't already. Also you can try going temporarily going straight from the modem to the laptop to rule out the router completely.

wireless connection is at fault here IMO. 802.11x and BTs are like nuts and gum. However - in the WoW client tick the deal at the bottom left and see how much is coming from http direct download.

I downloaded torrents for years over wireless with now issue. I would blame the router. Those cheapo 40$ routers are worthless for anything else than surfing.

If you do this keep in mind that you do this, as if you set it too low some games/applications will error out.

For example, on my cheapo router I lowered the TCP timeout and then Bad Company 2 started timing out after 5 minutes of multiplayer gameplay - TCP timeout was set to below 5 minutes, and was the cause of the issue.
