First Question answer:
Well, a Duron 900mhz would be technically faster than a 1ghz mobile celeron.
IMHO, and I work with many types of laptops, you will NOT notice a difference between a 1ghz Pentium3 vs a 1ghz Celeron.

Second Question answer:
Well, mhz for mhz, the Athlon 4 is faster than the Pentium3. But other factors will be more important in laptop speed. Video, Ram, HD, and the board which they all interface. Take four 1ghz P3 laptops....benchmark them using Winbench, Quake3,etc. You will likely find a huge difference in performance.....yet they're all 1ghz P3's.

Have Fun!

I just bought this laptop from Circuit City about a week and a half ago. Paid $1200 - 50 MIR - 100 Circuit City MIR = total $1050.

Would it be worth a try to get Circuit City to give me $50 (plus maybe the printer and DVDs)? Do they price match free add on product like that?

my friend bought a duron laptop... played a dvd movie for about 30 minutes and it ran out of battery already

What do you think of the laptop? Worth the money? How is the battery life and overall performance?

Check Google.com. Do a keyword search for something like "Toshiba S204" or "Toshiba review celeron satellite"

It's true, there are Duron laptops that are just horrible on battery life. It's been mentioned on this board before, but the Sony FXA33 has an abysmal battery life. Less than 2 hours with the additional battery. It stems from the fact that the bios on these laptops doesn't make use of the PowerNow features of the Duron.

The laptop is great sofar. I bought it because I had a $225 Toshiba Freecard that was expiring that I got from a laptop I bought two Thanksgivings ago (sold that one to a friend).

I like all the "extras" it has that weren't on my previous Toshiba (like built-in ethernet, video/TV out so it can be used as a portable DVD player, 256 RAM, TFT screen, 2 USB, IR to connect to my $99 iPaq, 20 gig drive, etc.).

Performance is great. It seems able to handle everything that I've tried; sometimes better than my main desktop (a dual 500 Cel).

Haven't had a chance to push the battery to it's limit yet. I'll try to do a test later today to see how long it'll last.

I also want to install some 3D games (like Serious Sam) to see if it can handle them or not.

I wiped the hard drive and installed XP Pro (it comes with XP Home) so that I could get rid of the extra junk that Toshiba put on there (there actually wasn't very much preinstalled software but I still wanted Pro since I need to login to my basement server's domain). The Pro install went smoothly; all the drivers needed are on Toshiba's web site.

I would also like to add another 256 RAM but haven't been able to find any yet (Crucial only lists up to 128 MB). Anyone know of a place to get 256 laptop RAM?

I'm going to try the pricematch at Circuit City today. Will let you know if I get anything back or not...

To sum it up; yup, I think this particular laptop gives a lot of "bang for the buck"; it's fast, lots of RAM, lots of HD, DVD, etc. About the only thing it doesn't have is a CDRW drive (Toshiba has a model for a couple hundred more that has a DVD/CDRW drive). Even if I hadn't had the Freecard (which needed to be used on a Toshiba product), I probably still would've bought this one. This is the second lowend Toshiba laptop I've had and they both had a lot of features for a couple hundred less than any other brand.

Just got back from Circuit City. They gave me the extra $50 off that CompUSA has this week Plus gave me a free Lexmark z23 printer and $30 credit for DVDs!

So if anyone else has purchased this before this week, be sure to do your price match with CompUSA before the sale ends (on Weds. I think).

What type of memory does this take? I couldn't find S204 listed at Crucial but I bought a 256 MB 144 SODIMM for my Dell LS from Crucial.

Did a first test on the battery last night by watching a 70 minute long DVD. It still had power left after the film was done (not bad, I think, since the DVD was spinning the whole time and the internal fan was running constantly). I'll try a test today that doesn't run so many motors constantly.

TKE96

Thanks for posting the deal so I could get my price match (I probably would have missed it because I missed the Sunday paper this week).

wirelessenabled

I believe it takes standard 144 SODIMMs so the one you found for your Dell would probably work. You couldn't find the the S204 because the full model number is 1805-S204. They only show 128 MB as the biggest available (the 204 has two slots, each able to handle 256 MB. Comes standard with one 256 MB stick).

mrchan

Video card is a Trident CyberBlade XP Ai1 with 16 MB. I'm going to try Serious Sam later to see if it can handle 3D at all.

skthestriker

You can get the printer and DVDs buy buying a Toshiba laptop at CompUSA by Weds this week. If you already bought this laptop before this week, take the CompUSA ad to where ever you purchased it from and try to get them to match the CompUSA deal.

Tried Serious Sam today but no luck. After a bit of research, it seems to be a common problem with WinXP and some video cards (OpenGL issues). Hopefully new drivers will come out some day...

skthestriker

Where did you purchase it. If it was from CompUSA, you should've got the printer at the same time (I think it is a $50 printer then you get a $50 mail in rebate on it's price).

The DVDs are a mail in coupon. You can download it from Toshiba's website.
