i3 + 750gb for $300 = pretty warm at the very least

The lack of USB 3.0 is the only turn off I can see from it. Other than that it's perfect for office/home use. Web browsing and 1080P content should have no problems what so ever.

but functionally it's not really any different than the op... imho you'd be better off spending the $$$ on an ssd to shockproof the op...

it's just that anything you are going to do on this class of laptop isn't going to be noticeably better on the i3, methinks... but if you grind spreadsheeets on cheap laptops then go for the i3!!!

Windows 7 works awesome on it, I have a bunch that I downgraded. Celeron/Pentium/i3 models all take the same drivers. Also, Windows 8 works pretty well with StartMenu8 and all the annoying stuff turned off (UAC, SmartScreen, Action Center, etc.). $229 is hard to beat for a fully-functional computer!

I agree. An SSD, a little more RAM and a clean install works wonders along with UAC off, StartMenu8, etc. as you mentioned. I have it set to bypass the login screen and boot straight to the desktop. Last night I downloaded some seasonal HD wallpaper and it actually looks better. There was an Intel HD Graphics update last night too.

I use this laptop as a couch laptop. It's just a convenience to not always be tied to my desktop in my home office.

The Celeron & Pentium models run cooler & quieter than the i3, so I'd definitely go with one of those + an SSD. Especially for $229.

Hi everyone I'm planning on taking some computer programming classes soon. I just purchased this laptop and what I'm wondering is will the celeron be able to handle my coding duties? For example will I be able to run IDE's, compilers, the sort of environments needed to code? Or should I look for a laptop with a superior processor?

Thanks very much for any help!

It should be fine for programming classes, plus you can just leave it on overnight to process if needed. Even in my advanced C++ classes, we never did anything that required anything super heavy-duty.

Don't do the things you are asking about, but there is a single 4GB stick of RAM. So if it doesn't perform those tasks well you can always add another 4GB.

2.4ghz Pentium is on clearance for $279:

As a reminder, the Celeron & Pentium models run cool & quiet. The i3 model tends to get warmer & kick on the fan (small amount of noise). Personally, I would take the Pentium model over the i3 model because it runs cooler & quieter.

So then Intel has renamed the Atom line to Pentium? I read an article saying they may, because Atom was viewed as "low end", which has apparently been a marketing challenge for that line of processors.

The $229.99 Celeron in the OP has also been marked down to $179.99 in BB stores only, online they are OOS/discontinued. I and a work friend of mine were both able to go into a store with our bestbuy.com receipts and have them do a return/rebuy with the new price under the holiday return policy (which ends 1/15). So it made a great deal even better, folks over in the SD thread report the same success.

I tried to call bestbuy.com first but they could only adjust if the .com price was lower (and it wasn't), so this is an instore thing only. It has to be done as a return/rebuy (exchange) to work apparently, they only allow 15 days for price adjustments after you buy otherwise (buddy and I got ours in early Nov. after deal was first published). No need to bring in the laptop at all, just the receipt.
