Noticed a nice Toshiba WRC-1000 wireless 802.11B router (4 wired ports) on cusa online for $29.99, B&M price was $59.99.

Showed the manager the printout, he looked at it for a few minutes and said no problem!

Link to $29.99 router normally $59.99

ONLY if the page goes down, PM me for a PDF of the page.

FYI Queens New York Superstore had a ton of them.

Yes, it is awesome for no rebates.

A net search reveals it is a discontinued product with no web support from Toshiba and I can't find a single review anywhere. Does anybody have any experience with this product? For $30 I just might buy it and try it, but if anybody has used this thing I would like to know if it works ok....

Thanks

I just hooked it up last night. It's pretty nice and heres the rundown:

It doesn't have an external antenna or a port for one, but my performance in my apartment was excellent. I used nyc.speakeasy.net and saw the full bandwith of my 3Mbps RR connection available. ( "L" shaped apartment with router at one end and laptop at other end, steel and concrete construction, about 80 feet point to point ).

Currently I have it set bridging to my existing SMC router becasue I ddn't want to lose my printer server capability. It also works perfectly fine as a regular router when set to NAT.

MAC cloning and manual/auto IP for WAN side.

DHCP/static for LAN side.

Turn off SSID broadcast, 802.1x control, MAC access control, 64/128bit WEP for WAN

WAN/LAN IP filters, forwarding

Got in on this in St. Louis (Sunset Hills)... thanks. Took forever to find it in the store though-- they didn't have it with the other routers, they were tucked away under the broadband kiosk for some reason. No probs with the PM online though.

I like the uplink port on this, don't know why Linksys and netgear is not having a uplink port their routers. Maybe I will just get one to bridge my wirelss network.......

For people wondering about BRIDGE mode, it allows you to plug the WRC-1000's uplink/WAN port into your current router, allowing your current router to maintain all DHCP and filtering duties, while at the same time giving you more ports. I.E. 4 port router + WRC-1000 4 ports = 7 ports total plus wireless.

Picked one up at the Milford CT CUSA. took a bit of discussion, but relatively hassel free to PM to web. then they offered me a 3 month aol subscription that i dont have to install on my computer, just sign up for in store. and they took $20 off the router right there, so i walked out with the router for $10.59 pretty sweet, i dont imagine AOL will give me any crap about canceling.

Umm, yeah. The terms should be somewhere in the paperwork you got. The upshot is that you now owe AOL three month's charges. Typically, you can't cancel it.

Did you really think they were just going to give you $20?

uhhh yeah, for the same reason rebates exist, cause people forget to send em in, people forget to cancel aol. why have you heard of anyone with an experience with this deal before?

-edit-

ok, that was easy, i called up aol, (1:45 am) and i asked what the terms of my service entailed, they told me i had 3 free month trial. and i asked to cancel it right then. she pleaded with me to at least install the software, but i said I changed my mind and didnt even want it on my system, I got my cancelation # and was assured no fees would be applied.

so end result, 4 port 802.11b router for less then $11 after taxes, nice deal.
i can leave it at my parents house for when im home, or attatch it to friends routers for lan parties.

Wow, that's really cool. Usually, those "drop your purchase by $x" deals imply you being stuck with that service for the duration of the contract.

What's RadioShack do all the time? 6 months of MSN? Didn't Best Buy do the same thing a while back? I know on all of those, you can't back out.

Thanks so much pooper!

Here is a little present: Sopah [accent on the last syllable] means poop in a 'bad' way in greek. Learned that tonight and saw your username, thought you would like it.

Went to the Compusa in Anaheim, CA. Was told that it was an "online only deal". I asked them nicely to go check. They did, came back to the register and said the nice words I wanted to hear: "yeah just give it to him at 29.99".
Sweet. The webpage didn't say anything about "online only". I bought two with that Price Protection Plan.
Hey, I figure in a year they won't even have anything close to a 802.11b AP so the closest I'll get will at least be a G series. What do you all think about TAP plans from compusa? I've been told if the router breaks [in whatever circumstance] they will replace it, no Q's asked. True?

Funny thing about stock: We looked all over the store, my poor CSR couldn't find the router and they had 4 in stock.
The problem? There was a stack of pamphlets placed right in front of the 4 boxes. Heh.

So, there should be two more ones at the Anaheim, CA store. En-yoy.

I just got in on this in the Woburn, MA store.

As someone else mentioned, they weren't with the rest of the wireless gear.

They were over in the computer systems area, under a shelf. I actually some good help from the staff, from finding the item to getting the price corrected.

No go in long island....2 rude cust service reps at the store basically told me no way....one guy even had the nuts to tell me that online pricing was different, and how did i expect them to pay for the stores electricity, and such...
what a bunch of jerks...it's not like i was trying to PM to some cheesy dot-com store - it's THEIR website

oh well...i went for the $30 AR Dlink at best buy

No problem picking one up at the Rockville Md. store. They had about a half dozen in view. Checked out at the customer service desk. Had no problem getting the web price....

Per usual at the NY Colonie store, they would not match. A few minutes later as I watched, they pulled 9 of them off the shelf so they wouldn't have any problems with any one else. They never go along with any of the better deals, even their own.:|

I got this at the COMPUSA in Schaumburg, IL. Pricematch was no problem. I just opened to test it out and it looks like it's very easy to setup. I didn't really test the signal since I live in an apartment which isn't really that big anyways. Overall.. looks good.
