Thought this was interesting:

http://www.zdnet.com/toshiba-finishes-acquisition-of-ocz-for-its-ssd-assets-7000025450/

Part of me thinks this was stupid, as OCZ makes some of the least reputable hardware in the business, especially when it comes to SSD's.

Reading the article leads me to believe it was a grab for the market and probably at a fairly low price, so it will be in an industry it feels is growing fast.

It will be interesting to see what happens. I think OCZ has some good technology here, just needs some tweaking to be reputable.

What are your thoughts?

OCZ bought Indilinx, which developed the Barefoot 3 SSD controller, which I think is actually better than the LSI/SandForce controller. I'm not sure how it stands up to the various Marvell controller revisions, or the LAMD controller however.

But if Toshiba wants to compete seriously with Samsung, Crucial/Micron, and Intel, having their own controller tech and NAND fabs can go a long way.

This. It will take a pretty major rebrand effort, but I think it was a wise move on Toshiba's part. Indeed, the tech is there, it just needs some proper support to bolster it.

This is an odd statement since OCZ's reputation isn't really bad at all. OCZ for me always meant high quality enthusiasts components. (Aside from the fact that one PSU by them once blew up for me.)

Overall I think it was a smart move by Toshiba, probably wanting to the same what Samsung is doing...eg. means it will furthermore drive down SSD prices, everything manufactured and supplied by ONE company.

OCZ also made other things, besides SSDs, like PSUs.
Maybe Toshiba really, really wanted to make PSUs?

Toshiba basically bought lots of engineers, and buildings so they basically have a much bigger R&D footprint now.

Back in the day, OCZ RAM was awesome.

I bought a PC Power and Cooling PSU that is made by Seasonic. Then OCZ bought them. Now it looks like Toshiba is buying OCZ. I have a 5 year warranty on my PSU. I checked and the warranty is going to be honored if needed.

I discovered this, this morning when I call PC&C tech support numerous times after submitting a web request form that came back like a 404. I finally called the corporate number and explained I wanted to order another SATA cable for my modular PSU. She said no ordering was available, nor tech support and no credit card services so she said she would just mail me one. (She couldn't even use their UPS service). Pretty sad. We both agreed that OCZ SSD drives pretty much sunk the ship.

The acquisition only included OCZ's client and enterprise storage divisions.

OCZ has been releasing amazing SSDs since the Vertex 4. Any potential quality issues by NAND Flash, cheap components/capacitors or whatever would be easily rectified by Toshiba, while the technology purchased is top notch. I also think it was a very smart move from Toshiba.

After owning a couple OCZ SSD's, "amazing" is not a word that would come into play to describe them. Toshiba probably got their infrastructure and machinery they would need anyway at a discount price. Wouldn't take too much to do a better job than OCZ.

With Tosh backing them, Ocz now joins the ranks of ssd makers with their own nand and controller fabs...i.e. Intel, Samsung, Micron, and SanDisk to name a few. This means they can compete price wise like never before. Nothing but good things to come for Ocz/Tosh imo.
