Not only that, they advertise them as a package kind of thing. Page 29 of the current add: "Free D-link modem and get $20 cash back after rebates Plus get free service for one month* when you buy this dlink modem, get your quickstart kit and sign up for comcast service at bestbuy." Then there's a picture beside it showing the Comcast logo, the Dlink box, and quick start kit box all together. Another thing, seems I've heard Comcast will tell people a modem won't work even when it might really work. ? >>
I don't have comcast myself, but have read messages in the past about their stubborn tech support. Obviously they have no clue what they are talking about. Its probably outsourced to some 3rd party call center.
Personally I think these internet cable providers don't want you using your own modem because they want to charge you extra for theirs.
