Hey guys,
a while back I ended up getting a Toshiba laptop from OfficeMax which was a Satellite L35-S2366 model - PSL33U-03W02K. It originally came with Vista on it which I wasn't a huge fan of. I ended up installing a copy of XP I had from my old desktop I bought but I can't seem to find any sound/video drivers, anyone able to help? I've been without sound for a long time and it may finally come in handy.

I *think*, if you run XP on a Toshiba Satellite L35-S2366, you're on your own!

But, I guess you already know that...

Um...

Most of those drivers haven't been updated in over 2 years - the newest one is over a year old.

Do you think they'll work with a modern lappy? I digress...

You know what? Ppl have been asking MS for increased security for years!

MS came out with Vista, which plugs a couple of major holes - which is what everyone asked for - and now they downgrade to XP. Hello?!?!?

I don't get it...

BTW, how did you transfer XP from "an old desktop" to your Toshy? I thought these licenses were only good for one machine.

They will definitely work. Laptop technology has been fairly proven so there aren't that many recent critical driver updates to keyboards, lcds, or wireless cards.

Listen, what is the point of your Vista machine being completely impervious to attacks (which nothing is, not *nix, not OS X, not Windows) if you can hardly use the thing due to any number of issues. the OP may simply not like how Vista moved things around that didn't need to be moved. Maybe he doesn't like the lack of bang for the buck. Maybe his software doesn't play nice with Vista, even in XP compatibility mode.

Much like how *nix and OS X are not for everyone, Vista is not for everyone either. I personally prefer XP over Vista, even if you do not. Though I do sort of like the new look of Vista actually, but I hate how non-glass aero is hideously ugly as compared to glass aero... they are too different from each other. The close/maximize/minimize buttons aren't even the same WTF?

He could transfer Windows over by cloning and then repairing the installation. Then, he calls Microsoft, and gets a new activation code.

WoW, Stu, baby! Simma down...

You made some good points! However...

The largest "number of issues" ppl complain about is the User Account Control (UAC) - a major security component of Vista. In Windows Vista, UAC and its Admin Approval Mode are enabled by default. From what I've seen & read, most ppl are just too dumb to figure it out (so far)! So, they turn them off...

Example: A co-worker was complaining that he can't connect to his Vista lappy from XP - and Vista sucked!

I asked him if he has the username & password enabled on XP, setup a workgroup, enabled file & printer sharing options on Vista, specified the network type, et cetera (another security hole MS fixed).

He's like, "Huh? Oh... No! Why?"

I said, "Never mind! I gotta run! Talk to you later..."

Sometimes you gotta be careful what you ask for... you know?

On compatibility: The only problem I've run across is poorly written software, like the latest versions of Winamp, CrapCleaner (aka CCleaner), et cetera. The older versions work just fine, including 8 year-old MS Office 2000 (sans Outlook) which isn't even officially supported by MS...

Aesthetics aside, are 'we' to argue that a LACK of security and the ability to run POORLY written software is preferable to learning Vista... which is inevitable anyway? Might as well be an early adopted IMHO and look like a genius to your friends (when they ask for help) rather than telling them to downgrade to XP and do without sound or whatever...

You will be assimilated - guaranteed! They've already forced Apple fanboiz into running Intel processors. Remember all the wailing and gnashing of teeth when that happened?

Besides, ppl made the same argument for downgrading to Win98SE when XP first came out, no?

Now it's Vista's turn! Give it time... Ppl will figure it out (programmers too) and everyone will love Vista, just like XP!

Seriously, i'm not your baby, so we can skip past that part.

I understand the reason that the UAC is there, and I agree with its purpose, i just don't agree with its execution. The main thing that i don't like is how it takes over everything until you respond to it, I wish there was an option for it to only say... hijack the program that it has a problem with. If WMP11 throws up a fit because are doing who knows what, then only WMP11 should be locked out, not the whole system.

The fact that Vista increases the number of steps it takes to do certain tasks, and changes some of the conventional methods of navigating around the system is what seems to drive most people (myself included) insane.

For a new user, vista should be fine, but for a person that has been running Windows for most of their life and has used all of them from 3.1 to XP , Vista can come as a bit of a serious change.

And to argue that Vista is so much more secure than XP that you cannot do anything to make it equivalently secure is just FUD. You can get Firewalls, AVs, Spyware/Adware Killers, and everything else on Xp just like you can on Vista.

And it isn't just 'poorly' written software that has compatibility issues, but older software titles as well, mostly games from what I have found.

And good luck assimilating me, it would take a massive, massive rebuild of Windows to get me to switch from OS X, especially with Leopard looking the way that it is.

LoL! Soooory... TheStu

I have a friend named Stu - actually, I call him Sturat (a corruption of Stuart in mailing lists)... thought it fit him better...

Anyway, Stu is a Mac fanboi too - always has been - always will be! Before that, it was Amigas - until they went out of business (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

The thing is, Stu baby (my bud) knows that programmers can add as well as anyone, and they design proggies for IBM PCs long before they're available for fringe computers (if ever). That's the only thing he had against Macs.

Is that still the case?

If so, how does that differ from some antiquated XP software not running on Vista (yet)?

The only things that I can think of that does not have comparable software on OS X is CAD, most everything else is available. I have also found plenty of great software that is only available on OS X, and the closest thing you can get to it on Windows is slow, or buggy, or not nearly as feature complete.

So, no, it's not still the case.

Yet, OS X survived, so maybe there's hope for Vista, yes?

Who knows... When Apple goes belly-up, maybe you'll even change your mind!
