Toshiba Magnia SG20 Internet Appliance with NetMAX - $399

I found these Internet Appliance units preinstalled with NetMAX Server Software for $399 at http://www.netmax.com. These cost at least $1359 on Toshiba's Website

I've looked around on various sites, and they are all over $1000 with the NetMAX software everywhere else. You can get them cheaper a few places, but without the software they are pretty pointless.

Looking at NetMax's website, the software without a server is $269 for the VPN Suite or $309 for the Professional Suite. So for $130, you get the Toshiba hardware with your software.

I just ordered two VPN servers, and I'll let everyone know when they arrive.

Not really worth it IMHO. The $399 version only includes VPN Server Suite 4.0x (which only does VPN, firewall, router and proxy server) and not the full Professional Suite that does mail, filesharing, etc. You can get free, dummy-proof Linux distros like IPCop and Mitel e-smith server that will provide most if not all of the same functionality as the VPN Server Suite. If they were selling you the hardware for $130, this would be hot. For $399, it's not.

Basic SG20 hardware can be bought for $195 here.

Hmm, that's interesting. I received my SG20's yesterday, and they seem to be working well so far. The web interface is really wonderful. I'm not really a Linux guy, so I'm pretty intimidated by some of the other options you mention. This is really no more difficult to configure than a Linksys or D-Link router though. And with more flexibility and power, I think I made the right choice.

You are right about the Professional Suite having alot more functionality. I think the extra $100 would be worth it though if I intended to set up a web server or mail server or any of that stuff. As I'm just doing VPN, firewalls, and routing, the VPN Server fit the bill.

It may not be a good solution for everyone, but I'm happy with it.

There is also a Yahoo group for the SG-10 and SG-20. There is quite a bit more information there about them, as well as a clark connect image to be dumped on the Mangia - it has more functionality for a home / small network user.
