Haha, right?

FWIW AFAIK it uses a customized Marvell controller with (of course) Toshiba 19nm NAND. This model is 9.5mm thick, but they do make a 7mm thick drive (but not on sale?).

Looks like a great drive and I need one but I need something that has a manual TRIM utility for Windows XP (old work laptop that has to have XP to run the industrial stuff). I know most drives now have good garbage collection services but would feel better with manual TRIM (Intel, Samsung, Corsair (I think now has this), etc).

Hmmm....

Toshiba controllers have traditionally had hyper-active garbage collection, so it was supposedly safe to use them with XP/Vista or in RAID. The Kingston V+ series comes to mind. I wonder if this drive has similar GC.

Review here. Specs and performance look great for the price. I may have to bite on this.

You mean $149.99, not $249.99.

Yeah, I meant to write $149.99 in the title.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to edit the title of a post, so I couldn't correct the mistake, or update it to reflect that the deal is dead, which is now the case. Is that privilege restricted to moderators?

I apologize to anyone affected. It would be appreciated if a moderator would update/correct the title.

Click on "Edit" and then click on "Go Advanced."

I don't have the "advanced" option (perhaps I'm already in that mode), but do have the option to edit the title of my post nonetheless. Unfortunately that doesn't update the title of the thread, but someone (thanks neocpp) kindly sent me a PM informing me how to do so. Because changing the title of a thread is non-obvious -- at least to me -- I'll mention it here in case it proves helpful to other readers:

Navigate to the sub-forum (e.g., "Hot Deals" in this case) containing the title/link of interest and locate your thread. Double-click inside the cell containing the title and it will become editable. Do not click directly on the link to your thread. The title is changed from outside the thread view.

I got one the first time around, now I'm regretting it since SSD prices seem to be falling through the floor... :/

^I've been holding off for that very reason. If they're this cheap now, how cheap will they be come BF?

Possibly more expensive. Who knows? I don't think "Black Friday" is better than any other day of the year to score great deals.

Hmmm....

There is a way to 'manually' trim an ssd with XP but it's not very convenient. First use PerfectDisk (or another decent defragger) and do a 'consolidate free space' run after that u can use an app that fills the rest of the drive with a file of nothing but zero's then deletes the file...effectively trimming the drive but it takes time depending on how much free space you have. I use this method to trim my old 1st gen Ocz Apex that doesn't even support trim or GC afaik...lol. The app I use to zero with is called freespacecleaner.exe or 'AS_Cleaner 0.5'. I use AS_Cleaner 0.5 cuz it has the option (tick box) to fill with 'FF' instead of '00' which is what the Apex (has the infamous JMicron 602b controller) needs...actually the Apex uses 2 x 602b's internally raided with a whopping 2 x 8K = 16K buffer...lmao

I dug up the link on the Ocz forums...the procedure was dubbed 'Tony Trim' cuz he came up with it.

No they haven't, prices have been fairly stable for about 12 months.

I was hopeful prices would dip last BF and it never happened (if anything they rose a bit compared to summertime when OCZ was trying to clear out stock). It's anybody's guess if we'll see better sales in the next 4-8 weeks.

Samsung essentially raised prices when they discontinued the 830 and replaced it with the 840(EVO)/Pro models.

Not sure about 'average' price but the deals have been increasing lately on SlickDeals with the prices falling. The Samsung 840 (non EVO) for $129.99 AR today is a good example (dead now).

Buy 2 and use promo code 5Save25 . Not sure what the requirements are, but usually you have to be signed up for the Newegg newsletter to use promo codes.

This code is good for $25 off $250. Combos do not qualify.

That's the lowest the 840 has ever been but I think the model is going EOL and we were looking at a $30 mail-in rebate. I don't mind MIR but some people do and it is always a question of how do you value your time.

I'm not exactly sure what I'll do with 2 SSDs but see above for a deal that finally got me to pull the trigger!

But for the most part, higher-end MLC drives (excepting the 840 Pro) have been $150+ for 250 GB. I.e. this drive, the Sandisk Extreme, Crucial m4, the Plextor M3 Pro at one point. Maybe we'll see more deals in the next month or two, that's impossible to predict.

^Excellent catch on the promo code. If you get 2, they'll be close to last year's BF prices on similar-sized SSDs.

Given the specs and reviews, this is probably the best cheap SSD out there right now.

So the 830 firesale just before 2012 BF never happened? That was an epic price dip last year, 128GB 830 went for $70 and 256GB version went for $155-160 dropping as low as $150 for a day before it pretty much went OOS everywhere. So yes, the prices did drop last year around BF time and they're dropping again right now. True, the prices rose after last BF because last gen SSDs were discontinued but I see the price trend going down again. As Engineer mentioned, 250GB 840 went for $130 after rebate just now, the 840 EVO went on sale twice for $165, both are TLC drives, but this Toshiba MLC drive went for $150. So yes, the prices are going down again. It might not be a firesale, at least not yet, but the prices are down compared to just a few months ago.

Unless there is any news of a discontinued line near this black Friday, there will be no such firesale. Not only that, but the 830 is one line of SSD. What other lines also experience such price dips? Not to mention the 830 was an "elite tier" SSD while the Q series is not trying to be that.

went back and checked and the 830 was a Gold Box deal at Amazon for $155 on Oct. 18th. I don't know if $10-$15 off the summer sale prices is a "fire sale" or "epic dip". I agree that's probably the best SSD deal in the past 12 months. Until it was discontinued this year, I don't think the 830 ever hit $155 again.

I'm not saying prices are not finally getting better, just that for a long while now $150+ has still been the benchmark price for a quality MLC drive in the 240-256 GB class. Hopefully that will change soon, but I couldn't wait any longer.

I already covered the 840 deal, which is an older model with a mail-in rebate. The trend is perhaps improving but I don't see the point of getting excited about a $165 TLC drive (even if it's a quality Samsung product) when the excellent 830 was already lower a year ago. If you cherry pick a high water mark (i.e. when the 840/Pro were introduced), of course the argument can be made prices are falling.

'Grats to everyone who got in on this deal!
