Toshiba R385 Impressions/Review?

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone has any opinions yet on Toshiba's new R800 series. It will be interesting to see how it compares to Lenovos upcoming X220 and whatever Asus ends up offering in the 14" SandyBridge category.

Plus if admins are listening, +1 vote for a full review!

Yep sorry mistyped, the R835-P56 or the i3 version. The specs look great, just like an updated R700, still 3.2lbs with a 13.3" screen but now with SandyBridge mobile processors, sounds like a good thing.

I'm just curious to see exactly how much they changed, for the better or the worse.

I'm also wondering if the HDD connection is a SATA3. I know the chipset supports it but whether they implemented that I don't know, I couldn't find it from their spec sheet, but its an important consideration to anyone looking to swap in a SSD.

i do not own either the R7xx nor R8xx but i've been poking at both at best buy, form factor pretty much exactly the same between the two.
Price at best buy was pretty good actually, like $750.

I love the R835's size, performance, build quality, and price but IMO the mediocre screen keeps it from being a viable alternative to the X220.

Bought one at local officemax (they have p56x on sale at 699 but OOS) without knowing what is in the box. I figure they charge 100 more, so they should give me something for it. Here is what I found out:

1. This model is made in China (I think the other models are made in Japan, I could be wrong. Frankly it really does not matter to me)

2. The only difference between P56x and P84 (as far as I can tell) is the CPU -- I5-2410M for P56x and I5-2435M for P84)

3. Not sure if they did anything about SATA III or Heatsink. Will wait for a few days (to buy an SSD and memory sticks and to see if this thing works fine) before opening up the hood.

Is there any software/bios info that can tell me if it is at SATA II vs III? Does opening up the back cover void the warranty?

Looks like there are two pre-configured products out there with this chip. P81 = 6gb with I5-2435M and P84 = 4gb. I found no information anywhere on P84 model yet.

First impression? Definitely an Okay machine but not perfect. If anyone cares, I can come back with a brief summary after tweaking it a little.

the p56x is SATA III capable but limited to SATA II via the BIOS.
