Toshiba Satelite not starting up

i just got the laptop yesterday, been trying to get it to work ever since. the original owner suggested tapping the "suspend" button that gets depressed as the lid shuts, but that didnt seem to do the trick. power LED is on, which makes me believe the laptop is still functional, i might be just missing something... anyone got an idea?

When you powered up, did you see the HD light flashing? Dumb question, but did you try raising the contrast for the screen?

not a dumb question at all well i would worry about the screen if i heard the fans turning... i hear no sound at all - dead silence, and which is why i am suspecting some kind of sleep mode anomaly. thx for trying to help!

Don't have it plugged in and take out the battery and put it back in. Even in sleep mode that would effectively turn off the machine and take it out of sleep mode.

try pressing/holding power switch for 10 seconds (some tosh models have a mechanical lock slider to prevent accidental power off, make sure that this is unlocked)
this should power off the machine (only charge indicator lit)

remove battery and ac power, then plug in ac power and press/hold power switch for 10 sec

if no luck report back

oops, forgot to check back on the thread...
the model # is 1805-S203, and the laptop doesnt come with a power on/off lock.
tried what you suggested, but unfortunately it didnt seem to do the trick

You may want to try reseating the RAM Module(s).
(Note: remove the battery and AC before doing so..)

Another common problem with the Satellite's is the Battery Harness
works loose after use. (that would require opening the laptop)

Sounds similar to a problem I have with my Toshiba 2805-S301.

My power button (as well as monitor & KB) only work sporadicly. I assume in my case the wiring is loose.

When my power button doesn't work, (thankfully) the DVD thingy will work to start it. Apparantly, my Toshiba is meant to double as a DVD player, and has a seperate "switch" to start the DVD. It's located on the (monitor) hinge.

If you have one of those, try it.

I'm thinking something may have shook loose in shipping.

thx, i treid reseating the RAM modules.. unfortunately extra stick that came installed in the laptop is not working. at least now i have it up and running, albeit very slow (some hdd problem) hopefully reinstalling windows clears this up
