Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm only seeing a single $150 rebate on that laptop, making it $679.99 after rebate. (There were two other potential rebates for $150 each, but they have both expired...)

Great deal. Up until now, the sub-$500 notebooks have been primarily found only around the Christmas season. I know how hard I have worked to get ones in years past. Great if they are now going to be available on a more regular basis. I bought BB Toshiba $499 specials 2 and 3 years ago and both are still going strong.

About the wireless:

I have an older Toshiba A15 which even though it has a slot, cannot be upgraded to wireless (easily anyway) This is pretty much a budget laptop like the hot deal here. Toshiba removed the internal wireless antenna (or didn't install one to begin with) and they covered the wireless on/off switch with a different plate. There are ways around this, you can buy an internal wireless antenna. Someone that has the laptop should open it up and let everyone know.

Wow, you had me checking back on my post to correct my spelling (hideen), however, I was glad to see that I had spelled it correctly.

For the record, my laptop model with the "hideen" wirelss port is the A15-S127, purchased back in August, '03. It came with a slot for the wireless lan card and an antenna was already installed. The manual didn't even mention it.

This is just the first of a three week campaign for cheap notebooks. Best Buy is kicking it off with the toshiba. I know that the next two weeks will have very similar deals, so the weekend training dvd said. Expect more cheap laptops in the next two weeks. My store ran out of these about 10 minutes after we opened. Its funny for the one lazy azz who comes in at 6pm thinking he deserves one cuz he was 7 hours too late. Some people think they're the only ones who read the front page of ads.

Can anybody tell me about how hot this model runs? My aim is to buy a laptop that can sit on my lap without burning me. I haven't done the research that I need to do, but somebody's quick analysis of how hot this one gets would be very helpful.

Thanks OP for posting this - I picked one up. It has lots of extra stuff loaded on it. I'd like to clean up the HD. How can I reformat the drive and reinstall WinXP from the included CD? There's no option to just install XP.

Wedge1: I used it for a few hours yesterday. Got about 3 hours on a battery charge just playing around, watching a DVD for 10 minutes, etc. Folks on other forums are saying that BestBuy ordered these with 4 cell cheaper batts that dont last too long. It runs very cool. DVD drive is very loud when it first spins up. Screen is HUGE compared to my old laptop's 14". Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase. It's a great deal for $500. I'll probably buy more RAM when my rebate checks come in.

Ladypilot, can you comment on whether this lappy has a small switch on the front which would control power to a wireless lan card if one were to install one. Some here would also be curious to know that if there is a door in the bottom about 2 inches square inside which mght be housed a wireless antenna just begging for a wifi card to be installed...
