Does anybody know if this is a good Dvd-Rom drive? How good is this deal? Do you need a decoder card or dvd-software like with the one that was at CompGeeks?

I have not heard much about this drive. Toshiba products are usually pretty solid. This is a BARE drive only, meaning you will need either a hardware decoder card or a software decoder program.

I have this drive; it's fast and relatively quiet although the spin-up and spin-down is still noticeable. It's a pretty good deal.. much less than I paid, but it is a bare-drive only. You'll need your own IDE cable and possibly even mounting screws (I don't recall). You don't need a decoder card if your CPU is fast enough (chances are anything 500 MHz or higher is good). However, you do need your own software decoder. Toshiba CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives have always been well-regarded afaik.

I got this drive from buy.com about 2 weeks ago. Paid $135 for it and it included the Hollywood decoder card and software. this was with the free shipping which is going on now. i used a coupon for ... i believe $30 off $150. this works out to about the same deal as at onvia minus the decoder card (the onvia deal doesn't have the hollywood decoder card) and i've seen it listed for sale at various site for around $57...but you might be able to find it cheaper. Now i'm wondering why this decoder card is needed if you can simply use software to view dvd movies??? vroom

I use PowerDVD w/ my Pioneer 10x (soon to be Toshiba 12x) and its got great quality...so yes, its good enough..only 17" Sony tho =(

Also, I have heard that the Hollywood+ w/ passthrough cable degrades your 2d quality b/c of he passthrough...not too sure on how bad it is though...

region free is very important if you plan to play DVD movies from different parts of the world. For example, if you were to bring to the US a DVD movie you bought from the UK (region 2) you wouldn't be able to play the disc because of the incompatible regions (US is Region 1). If you have a region free drive, it generally bypasses that little "protection." Region free is also known as RCP1 and Region locked is RCP2.

Region free discs will be labled Region 0 or Region ALL and are compatible with any RCP2 drive.

For the question about why people use decoder cards: One consideration is that many video cards do not include video out for a TV connection, and the Hollywood+ does. Even with TV Out on video cards, though, they usually do not include an S-video out (to my knowledge, I think some have it), and the Hollywood+ has that, too.

I have an older Toshiba (2x), and it's a nice little drive. I've had no problems with it though I've not used it a tremendous amount (third optical drive in my main system, only for DVD playback).
