It may look cheap on the surface but you need to buy HD software capable to watch any HD contents.

Just a note here...

You can get the Ultimate version of like PowerDVD or WinDVD, OEM keys for about 10 bucks on ebay.

Really? Where?

I received my unit very quickly. Had it installed in no time. The only problem is that HD videos wont play correctly.

The begin to play for a few seconds and then PowerDVD stops and tells me that it cannot play the video due to error 0103 (and later 0107).

These errors indicate that one of your components is not HDCP compliant when they actually are. If you do a quick google search on these errors, you'll find that a LOT of people are having the same problems. Cyberlink Advisor states that all of their equipment is HDCP compliant yet they are still receiving the errors and Cyberlink has not issued a fix. Instead, they have moved on to PowerDVD 8 which does support Blu-Ray but NOT HD-DVD.

In any event, I was told to locate and find WinDVD Plus Blu-Ray (It needs to be the Plus Blu-Ray version otherwise it will not support BR and HD-DVD).

Unfortunately, it is a lot easier to find PowerDVD than WinDVD Plus BR.

I actually tried that as well but didnt have much luck.
1. Previously had PowerDVD 7.2 Deluxe installed.
2. Received the 0103 error. Installed some "fix" from Cyberlink and then received the 0107 error.
3. Installed AnyDVD - This seemed to break everything. Not only did the HD player not work, I was then unable to play ripped HD and Blu-Ray media that was stored on my HD whereas I was able to before installing AnyDVD
4. Formatted
5. Installed PowerDVD 8 - Which I then found out supports Blu-Ray but not HD-DVD :boggle:
6. Uninstalled PowerDVD 8 / Installed WinDVD. Found out that WinDVD Plus will not play HD/BR and that you need WinDVD Plus Blu-Ray
7. Uninstalled that. Reinstalled PowerDVD 7.2 - Back at square one.
8. I will try AnyDVD again at some point this week.

I got this drive and my five free movies from a previous drive on the exact same day. What great timing I'm running Vista x64 and this is my experience with HD playback software:

WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-ray: Runs DVDs perfectly, but gives me the MFC Application Error when trying to play HD-DVDs.

Nero Showtime w/ HD-DVD/Blu-ray Plugin: Crashes when I try to read from the disc, but will play files after ripping with AnyDVD HD.

PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra: Works Flawlessly. Newest version is 7.3730d.

Is your PowerDVD the Deluxe version or the Ultra? You need Ultra or I think you can buy HD plugins for the Deluxe version.

In for one, thanks. Now I don't need to worry about finding a way to get my HD DVDs onto my computer in the future.

Yep, you need PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra with patch 7.3730d for this to work flawlessly. I had headaches with a blu-ray drive (LiteON DH-4O1S-11) that came with 7.3 BD Edition but it would crash all the time until I got the above version. Oh yeah, in 4-1. Thanks OP.

I do have the 7.2 Deluxe but I will definitely try the build that you've mentioned and post my results.

Thanks!!

Ubuntu I think has HD-DVD/Blu Ray software or a plugin
I remember seeing a menu that let you burn them

Geeks loads FedEx trailers and then they go to a distribution point. So, it's not really FedEx that took its time; Geeks had a tracking number for you long before your package actually got into FedEx's "hands."

mine arrived while i was in new orleans over the weekend. it was in a little plastic sleeve inside of a giant box with no padding or packaging whatsoever. very poor job, imho. haven't had time to see if it works yet. the box didn't look like it had been used as a football, so that's a good sign.

Does this bypass the security handshake to see if the display you are using and the graphics card are HDCP compliant?

I have a truckload of HD DVD's but would like to be able to watch them on an older shuttle with XP.

Yes, AnyDVD HD nullifies the need for HDCP compatible devices. Theoretically you shouldn't need AnyDVD HD for VGA connector output, but I have read mixed stories on this.
