Hmmn as tempting as a $119 Toshiba SD1600 is I think I'll have to pass for the following reasons:
1) I don't really need a DVD Player, I want one.
2) I only watch an average of 60 minutes of TV per day.
3) Taxes, need I say anything else?
Now for the more relevant reasons (besides #1 above).
4) I just spoke with the experts at
Home Video Library (503-760-6488) who told me about the new model
Toshiba SD2700 which can read CD-Rs and include some minor tweaks (same crappy remote), they sell this for $199.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you see it) my
voice of reason has kicked in and I'll probably wait until Fall or Winter 2001 to buy a new DVD Player.
Here's some more info I found from
DVDFile.com:
TOSHIBA
Toshiba is making an aggressive push into the digital realm of DVD and consumer electronics. Toshiba announced that 5 DVD players will make their debut in 2001. They are the SD2700 ($299), SD2705 ($349), SD4700 ($399), SD5700 ($449), and the SD9200 ($1,999). The SD2705 will be a 5-disc DVD/CD changer that meets the Black/PLUGE test for proper calibration of black level. The SD4700, SD5700, and SD9200 are due out in June will have 54MHz/10-bit Video DAC. The SD9200 will have Toshiba's Super Color Stream Pro Technology, and will be DVD-Audio compatible.
But damned $119 is AWFULLY tempting but realistically it's just goin to gather dust, so I must be brave and move onto the next hot deal.
