$2999.92 at OneCall.com was by far the best price I have seen for the Toshiba TW56X81 (HDTV Ready). Our local Best Buy had it on sale for $3999.99. The closest online price was @ $3400. Hope this helps if you are looking for an early Christmas find. We have been dreaming of this TV for years. Finally ordered one for ourselves!!! Yippeee!!!

Shipping for me (from Washington State? to Texas) was $256. This would be about equal to my local sales tax.

Well, the profit from e**baying 5 ps2's for a grand each at e**bay would about cover your bases

This is a sweet TV... a regular 56inch digital tv would go for this much and this is a widescreen model (read: bigger 16x9 picture which is what you'd really want the better quality of digital tv for). You should definitely consider a progressive scan dvd player to compliment the purchase though if you go digital with your TV. High-def TV broadcast is a bit off (unless you want to pay a ton for digital DirectTV channels), but you can have reasonably high-def DVD's right now. Players can be found for like $300. I heard somewhere that the ps2 even has progressive output, but I'd bet this was probably someone just confused about the component output and progressive scan capability.

That looks like a projection tv though isn't it? Projection TVs kinda suck... I'd rather pay a bit extra for a console 16x9 tv, although they'd be a bit smaller. I saw a couple at Best Buy that looked really nice.

jeraden...a 16x9 Directview TV will only come as big as maybe 38" and cost a bunch more...and if you looked at this tv, I bet you'd change your mind about projection TV's sucking (they've come a long ways)

zhensel...doubt you can find a real progressive scan DVD player for $300 (I wouldn't consider the Pioneer 434 a real one)...they start at $500 and up...but it would look way cool on this

wish I had the room for one (and the $'s)

I picked up a TN55X81 from a local vendor last year for $2100 (vs. $1950 for internet prices), but the negotiation was completed using both Onecall and Lee's Electronics as starting points. The price was normally $2799 at the local shop and $3199 (yikes above the $2999 new list) at the local BestBuy. I paid a bit more than the internet stores since I had to pay tax, but I wanted the local service.

Go to www.digitaltheater.com for the "serious" audio/videophiles. They know where to shop for the good stuff.

I actually have been planning on getting this one... I just have been to lazy to get to Best BUy to look to see if it looks good.... and then order from the net. I guess I have to get my butt over to Best Buy and force myself to see it first. Anything else good for under $4,000 that would be better?

I got the TW56X81 back last March and I absolutely love it. There is, IMOHO, no other way to watch dvds but on this TV. I paid $3800 locally for it (they price matched a website price).

I think the reason that Toshiba is letting it be discounted so heavily now is because a new model is coming out soon to replace this model.

There is a fair amount of setup involved with this TV (calibration, etc.), and unless you have some sort of "white glove" delivery, you may have difficulty setting it up yourself. Just getting it into the house was an adventure.

Ahhh... &*#$&#$& I hate the thought of having to get up and drive to Best Buy to see this first... I want this so badly, but just too darn lazy to go look at it.

Well... I am not too impressed with this tv. The projections is still blury and still not good enough to have in a room where seating is anything but directly in front of the screen... I liked the RCA 38 inch tube HDTV... very sharp. I guess I am hard on projection... How is the sharpness and clearity on Plasma tvs???

OH, my Best Buy had it for $4499!!!

Unclemo, if you saw a blurry screen on a TW56X81 it was either due to (a) weak cable and/or (b) it wasn't calibrated correctly or recently.

I had to put a Radio Shack cable booster (approx. $24) on my cable wire and then my picture was crystal clear (digital cable won't be in my area for another few weeks). You have to be careful, though, with those boosters because you can overjuice.

Calibration needs to be done initially upon installation and then again after 30 days (you can calibrate it yourself), and then thereafter every 6 months.

With my set you can see the picture clearly even at a 35 degree angle.

As for plasma sets, they'll give you the same problems if you have weak cable. Their calibrations are totally different from my set, so I can't comment on that. Plasma sets are *very* good sets, but very expensive to buy and to fix.

Plasma sets should require little or no tweaking nor any calibration. They are almost like LCD's. Thin flat sets that you can hang on your wall or ceiling.

A 43 inch set should only set you back about $10,000 to $15,000 for the Sony and I believe Mitsubishi ones...

Good luck.
