I just don't know if I buy into the whole "upconverting" thing with DVDs. My Panasonic Plasma TH37PX50U has an outstanding 480i-480p line doubler as is. I don't even run my DVD's out of the player in progressive mode, because the Panny does a better job of upping than the DVD players I've used.

I just don't see how something mastered on 480i/480p can be made to look that much better at 1080i. But then, I haven't seen the output of an Oppo, so I'll keep an open mind. But I won't be buying one. Blueray or HD DVD? Sure, when the price comes down and more titles are available.

I got the player yesterday from costco. The output is slightly better than my 2.5 yr old Sony that does 480p. I have it pluged in via HDMI to my 32" LCD HDTV.

I have to agree with slikks, it's only a slight improvement.

I have not experienced any skipping, and it has played back-up dvds with no problems.. So if you are looking for a cheap player with pretty good quality, go for it..

Hi there i was hoping that someone could help me. I bought this dvd player Toshiba SD-K860 upconvert player from Costco. The problem i am having is this, i can get the player to work but for some reason i cant seem to change the format. I can go into settings and change it to eithe 480p, 720p or 1080i but on the remote there is a button it says HDMI, according to the manual you should be able to press this button to change the format but when i press it it says "not allowed at this moment" does anyone else have this problem?

I couldn't get that button to work either and was annoyed to have to hook up the rca connection first to setup the player so it would output to HDMI.

I'm going to take mine back and try another one. The one I got sometimes stutters and has a horrible lag when switching layers on a dvd, sometimes 10 seconds or more. Definitely not a smooth transition

Hey Drew this is what i found out. In the manual page 14 lower left corner you will see it talk about HDMI. If you press STOP while watching a DVD it will save the spot you are at, at that point you will be able to switch to different modes using that HDMI button and only at that time. I have used it, it does work. I have a 62" Mitsu TV and so I cant really see the difference up close, my living room isnt all that big for something that big, but it does work. Also take note as the last sentence on that paragraph states, "The resolution of the picture may not be increased even if they are selected." What does this mean and why would you get a upconvert dvd player if it doesnt work???? anyone????

I just got the Toshiba for father's day. Hooking it up via HDMI isn't the easiest thing to do. I hooked it up with the RCA cords that came with it in order to get a picture. I entered setup, went to video changed it to HDMI, then to audio to change it from the default bitstream to PCM. Exited the setup, plugged in the HDMI and changed the Sony to the correct selection and it's working great. It's not plug and play.

Can anyone else confirm this? also what type of cables are you using? high end hdmi? or the cable that came with the dvd player?

My kid watched a Disney DVD, I asked her to tell me if she saw any freezing. None reported with the first movie on the player. I had the old Toshiba (which I returned to Costco a month ago) freezing was frequent.
