Touch Pro 2 on Sprint

Here are my thoughts about the Touch Pro2 after living with it for a week and a half.

I switched from a Diamond to a Touch Pro 2 and would never go back. The Diamond was my first pocket PC/smartphone and there were some things that kept nagging at me for the year I've had it. Sure the Diamond could do most things that the Pro can while maintaining a small form factor. I didn't even bother with a case for the Diamond because I carried it around in my pocket and it was barely noticeable.

What bothered me almost from day one was the small screen compared to the iPhone that made Internet browsing somewhat challenging and typing on the screen keyboard was difficult at times. The battery life was not good even with all of the tweaks applied.

IMO, the TP2 solves these problems. The screen is nice and large and I can read most web pages (like this one) without even zooming in. The on-screen keyboard is useable and it's actually taking me a while to get used to having a big hardware keyboard. Not only that but, my co-worker has a TP1 and I can feel the difference described by others when compared to the TP2. The TP2 feels nice and sturdy. The battery has been much better than my Diamond's even at stock settings.

For the past five days that I've owned the TP2 I've been carrying it around in my jeans pocket and don't really notice it. I don't see what the big deal is when people describe it as being a "brick" or big and bulky. It feels "just right" to me.

As far as the "classiness", the TP2 looks classier to me because next to it, the Diamond appears to be more plasticy with the huge button in the center. The TP2 has the metallic colored buttons miniaturized and out of the way beneath the screen.

The screen is what really makes it worth its weight in gold. The screen alone is what motivated me to switch. The keyboard is just a luxury to me, but the more I use it the more I'm glad it's there.

In short, I'd say that the upgrade from a Diamond to a TP2 is worth the cost. It's a totally different experience. In my opnion, the large, crisp screen alone is worth the upgrade.

Thanks for sharing your review. I'm anxiously awaiting my TP2 to be delivered on Monday. One question that I have for TP2 owners is what case are you using? If any.

I'm not using a case "yet." I've been carrying it around in my pants pocket and that's working out fine for now.

I'll probably buy a TP2 when the HSPL is unlocked so I can use it on Alltel. Using a TP1 right now.

I have the palm pre right now and absolutely love the OS save some minor kinks. Still I'd switch to a TP2 the moment I can get rid of my pre

Why? You're probably use to the awesome touch screen/OS and the TP2 doens't have an awesome touch screen/os. The TP2 is a great hardware device but the OS isn't as awesome as the Pre's but the TP2 has a much better keyboard and a better screen IMO. I'd still get the TP2 over the Pre cus the keyboard on the Pre is still tiny for me.

yea it does actually.

Comparing it to a Pre the Pre has a MUCH better touchscreen/OS Windows Mobile just still shows through so much.

how touchscreen friendly is the Pre keyboard ? The onscreen keyboard on the Touch Pro2 is so good the physical keyboard is almost a luxury.

The Touch Pro2 is very easy to use with the touch screen and no stylus.

Most significant difference between the Pre and Touch Pro2 isn't the OS, it's the size.

I absolutely love my TP2. The everything data plan from sprint is awseome. Dont have to pay extra for gps use. The tweakbility factor on these phones is near endless. I just started watching movies on my Tp2 the resolution makes it great. and the TV out feature (with the optional cord) lets you output to other devices to if you want.

If you get a slingbox you can watch YOUR tv on your phone anywhere.

Its not perfect and actually has some issues. But I still love it.

Look here for the super tweaks and issues ppl are having

If you need extra screen protectors, I bought these Ill let you know how they are whne I get them. Very inexpensive

Just read over at that PPCgeeks site that neither the Sprint or Verizon TP2 phones have the FM radio feature enabled. I'm sort of bummed out about that. I know it's a minor thing but I actually would use it!

Some one is prolly working on a hax right now to unlock the feature. Just keep checking the PPC forums.
but in the meantime pandora.com dosent officially support the TP2 yet but people have gotten it to work with an installed cab file. give it a shot

You could also try the mediocre sprint radio.

I don't think anyone is going to be able to hack the FM tuner on the Touch Pro II. The original Touch Pro also had its FM tuner disabled, and the hackers worked on it for over a year to no avail. Pretty sure it's disabled permanently, so the TP2 may be the same

I have to ask, how rugged is the new design? I'm about to return my Touch Pro for the THIRD time for servicing because of keyboard related issues. First my keyboard light and backlight would just never turn off. Second the keyboard just didn't work. And now the portrait / landscape orientation switch doesn't work and it's locked on landscape no matter if the keyboard is in or out.

I love the hardware keyboards, but I can't stand how fragile it makes my Touch Pro. It seems like even a small 1 foot drop is enough to seriously tweak something up.

Add FM Radio on T-Mobile HTC Touch Pro2
Posted by Danny on August 26th, 2009
There is FM Radio on the HTC Touch Pro2. You?ll just have to jump through some hoops to get it.

Straight from XDADevelopers:

FM Radio on the Touch Pro 2
Overview
Some releases of the Touch Pro 2 come without the FM radio software installed.
The reason for this is unknown, but the hardware is still there and supports FM radio.

How do I get it then
?Start by visiting this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521356
?Download the CAB file.
?Copy the CAB file to your device (either using Active Sync, WMDC, or via your storage card).
?Use File Explorer to navigate to the CAB file.
?Click on the CAB file to run it.
?Follow the on-screen prompts to install it to the device memory (storage card doesn?t work).

After reading around some more...

Holy crap. This looks like THE phone to get if you're tied to Windows Mobile.

1. Supposedly pretty solid construction (I just handled one today and the construction was definitely better than the original TP).
2. Screen the size of iPhone (finally)
3. CDMA AND GSM!!! Get a Sprint CDMA TP 2, go to a foreign country and buy a SIM card and you're good to go! Two phones in one - sorta!
4. Possible FM radio (does Sprint version have FM radio?)
5. $600+, but better than a $400 TP that more or less bricks itself every month.

Just got mine today. I have Verizon as my carrier though. Finished the initial setup and activation. Trying to put it down long enough for the battery to get a full charge. lol

Sprint and Verizon are both really bad about gimping their phones.
BUT, I believe Sprint is getting the Hero soon, and its too damn easy to unlock Android phones so they will have to give up their strangle hold.

I'll have to disagree on the point of Sprint gimping their phones. With the Touch Pro 1 a lot of people purchased the Sprint version and used it on Verizon's network since it wasn't gimped. I had the Sprint Touch Diamond and the only feature that Sprint left disabled was the FM radio and there was a hack for it three months after it's release.

Edit: I'm hopeful that the FM radio on the TP2 will be working soon now that it's been unlocked for the GSM phones.

Yea it feels a lot more solid but the only thing to worry is that like all sliders, if you drop them they are more prone to break.

In my opinion this is a solid feeling phone. There is no "play" in the slide out keyboard like I've noticed in some cheaper phones. The buttons feel solid too.

Not only that but, the OS feels responsive and smooth right out of the box. My Diamond required several tweaks (or the right custom ROM) before it felt right. This phone makes the TP1 look like a beta model in both build and utility.

i love this phone. got the verizon one a week and a half ago and have nothing but good things to say about this phone. the keyboard feels right and responsive and after doing the memory tweaks (disabling push web pages, etc.) the phone just flies along. the speakerphone is loud and clear and i love the whole concept of putting it upside down to enable it and the mute button on the back there. what really impressed me though is the accuracy and quickness the gps is. ive gone out running with it a few times and have even taken streets/roads i normally wouldnt think to go down because not knowing where they lead and the gps is right there along with me in google maps to direct me through. it'll also be nice to put in a prepaid sim when i travel and still use my phone while im traveling. the tethering works great also and my friends were amazed at how fast web pages were coming in on my netbook. and now that google has enabled gmail through activesync its now complete. im very satisfied with this phone and will feel that much more better when i receive my mail-in rebate from verizon.

How do you put a prepaid sim into a CDMA phone?
