Heh.. I'm in the same boat. Every day I come in with a new sore spot depending on what I worked the night before. The good news is, it's getting easier, I'm getting stronger, I'm seeing muscles I never saw before, and my endurance has improved drastically. But I still have lots of work to do!

Do we have a team name yet?

I'll have to ask my old roommate, who got this ball rolling in the first place.

I'm signing up for the one in Minneapolis on May 19. If I'm still alive and someone wants to fly me out to Vegas I'll definitely go round 2 in October!

I'm training for it now, but I have a long way to go! Also my 'friend' who wants me to join is a bit sketchy and I don't really know if he will get a team together. If he doesn't, can I join your team?! Or maybe I'll join your team anyway and do two of them!

Serious.

I think it's awesome and am considering it...locally there is said to be one here next year. What does your training look like to get ready for this? Watching the site's promo vids, everyone looks to be in pretty d@mn good shape.

Personally I have a long way to go for training to be Tough Mudder ready, but right now I'm focussing on:

1) Losing weight - I've lost 45 so far, 3 more to go until I reach my original goal and switch my primary focus

2) Building endurance - There is a lot of running in Tough Mudder and I'd stopped running about 6 years ago.

3) Upper body strength - For the wall climbing, monkey bars, rope climbing, etc.

To do that I'm currently doing p90x every day (currently on day 45), C25k every second day even when it's -30 degrees or blizzarding outside to get used to the elements (half way through week 7 of 8), and as many other recreational but physical activities as I can fit in, dancing, hiking, walking, swimming, stair climbing at work, and lots and lots of stretching!

Once I hit my weight goal and finish p90x I'll switch my focus more to upper body strength and endurance and also add pain tolerance, specifically for the ice cold water obstacles. I don't really know how I'm going to do that yet, likely some sort of combination of p90x, running, and TM workout suggestions.

Also, to keep me on track I have a 5k scheduled at the end of April, I want to find a 10k to do in July, and I'm climbing Kilimanjaro in September. And I'd really like to do a smaller obstacle course type run this summer too.

I'm up to running 2mi easily, and am going to start lifting next week (starting after my fitness test tomorrow). I'm going to hit GOMAD again and shoot to put on ~30lb by then, and I still have plenty of time to get my run better as well.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into p90x, looks like a good rounded workout. To prepare for this, I've got a lot of work to do, particularly on the strength and pain tolerance. Running has always been easy for me to build endurance, but when strength and pain tolerance is involved at the same time, it's a whole different game, much more exhausting.

I've been out of it for a while and started aiming for 5 miles a night my first night out... bad move... Pretty sure it was ITB irritation. It's gone now but I'm holding off the running for another month at least. Not going to risk anything that will cause me to not be able to go in October. I kept pushing through the exhaustion with no symptoms and it didn't appear until like two days later when I woke up and could barely walk! I struggle with mind over matter when it comes to working out and can injure myself easily.

Signed up at a gym to try elliptical and treadmill but those would agitate it. While waiting for healing, I started cross training with the cycling class after testing for agitation the first night. Much to my delight I can push as hard as I want to the point of wanting to pass out with no agitation or injury to any muscles or joints so I'll probably keep it up. Averaging about 30 miles a day in a 1 hour session 5-7 days a week. Incredible lower body and core resistance training with hill climbs and tension builds and an hour of HIIT cardio all at the same time in one easy hour.

Doing body weight stuff at home for upper body and core to regain previous upper body and core strength before I start any weights; mostly just to keep current muscle mass while losing fat for now, and wake up the stabilizer muscles before I lift again. Sitting around 50-60 good pushups right now and 120 slow long crunches but I need to pick up a pull up and curl bar and probably some dumbbells to work other muscles as well. Biceps, neck, and back are kind of getting ignored.

I've gone from a previously dead consistent 210 to 203 just since the start of this month. Aiming for 35 lbs off by October to get me back to my 175 "fighting weight". Didn't have the cardio endurance to do any of the crazy stuff like P90X or Insanity type stuff just yet. Starting to get my endurance and oxygen capacity back, then it's game on.

I showed my mom the youtube video for Tough Mudder 2011. She called me crazy.

I found that I definately need to train for upper body strength (esp after reading recommended training on the tough mudder site). I can do 5 pull ups, but I want to get that up to 10-15 by the summer.

I'm looking into starting crossfit training... anyone try it?

Well said. I just did this yesterday in SoCal and it was a lot harder than a half marathon. I think cross-fit type training isn't bad, but I'd say the minimum requirement for it to not feel like a five hour death march is being able to do a 1/2 marathon in <3hrs PLUS be able to do 15+ pushups/pull-ups. (I did TM in <3 hours but I'm a triathlete in training.) It's not a timed event by the way.

Regarding obstacles you're worried about, other participants give you help or leeway as you need it. For example you can wait at a tunnel entrance until it's all clear, then ask your pal behind you to hold off. Or if you must, skip an obstacle. I didn't see anyone skip one, but technically you can; it's all a personal challenge so it's up to you. My claustrophobic friend gritted and got through the tunnels just fine. It's brief. You can see that daylight isn't far.

The only thing you can't get help with is the "electroshock therapy". Yeah it smarts but the shocks are brief. That and the ice bath dunk were the least comfortable challenges. All in all, epic fun. Like being a kid again for a few hours. Recommended.

Why is no one addressing my very valid concern? Or am I just a big pussy?

Actually I think this is a very valid concern. All you need is a couple people to fall or trip up and while the people behind continue to push the- fallen people wont be able to get up. Ive been in a few situations where there were so many people crowded together and basically pushing you while your walking that its very easy to stumble. And with the force of so many people pushing you cant help but be pushed whatever direction the crowd is going. In this type of situation even if someone trips in front of you and you try to stop you cant. Hence people get trampled to death in these situations.

However I would have to assume that these situations have been thought out and prepared for in these games

I haven't been to Tough Mudder yet, but from ALL of the videos I've seen of this obstacle, and others, they only let so many people through at a time. Presumably for this reason. If they didn't, every obstacle would contain the risk you describe, and water related obstacles moreso I would think.

Northstar,
Thanks for the description! I'm so excited!! I saw the pics for SoCal, it looked like insane fun. There was even an obstacle I hadn't seen before. Was this your first Tough Mudder?

Ran a wimpy 10min for the first time since I suffered an open fracture on my left middle finger. It was throbbing when I finished. Guh... falling behind already.

Bah, all the obstacles are mud and climbing things. I was hoping for the balance beams, Walking Dead highway full of cars, etc.

Balance beams! I forgot about that! There is a mystery obstacle too. Maybe it'll be that one. I'm just glad there is no rope climbing.

Arg, I wanted to do rope climbing too! Maybe you have to rope climb up to the plank.
