Tounge burns with mouthwash, what gives?

I'm using this albertsons brand blue stuff, right when I put some in my mouth, it starts burning the sides of my tounge (not enough for me to spit it out) by the time 30 seconds go by, it feels numb.. When I spit it out, it feels fine.. what gives?

That'd be the alcohol... it's a different kind than in vodka. Vodka = ethyl alcohol.
most mouth washes = methyl alcohol, i believe

To get the full antiseptic effects, you do realize that you DON'T have to light it on fire right?

Also, Listerine doesn't contain methanol. That would make you go either blind or dead, and I doubt Pfizer wants that

It's the alcohol going into the pores and nooks and tiny cuts inside of your mouth formerly inhabited by germs that supposedly are killed by the alcohol. Pour alcohol on your arm and it doesn't do much. Cut yourself and pour alcohol. Hurts. That's basically what that burn is in your mouth that you'd feel.

Methanol! I sure hope not. It would suck to go blind trying to prevent bad breath.

Mouthwash burns my tounge as well .... So I deal with the pain for like the last 10 seconds, then spit it out and wash my mouth out with water. Kills a lot of the germs though so it is good...
