It's not like there is a real alternative!

Hmmm... Touche.

Well, if the massive swathe of nothing that runs from Texas through Nebraska is good for one thing, it's testing one's fuel economy. Several tanks over.

When I flew over US, I think there were nothing but fields for 2-3 hours...

I was gonna say, no Michigan!?

Personally Michigan is cool if you know where to visit. Western side of Michigan has tons of nice beaches and breweries. Heck Traverse City/Sleeping Bear Dunes/Leelanau peninsula area alone is worth a trip.

You're gonna hate it there.

Doesn't matter where "there" is...you're gonna hate it.

I see you have Pittsburgh on the list. If you are a sports fan then take up a baseball game at the best stadium in all of baseball. If you are not a sports fan then you just cut out 50% of what the city is about. Also Kennywood Amusement Park is pretty damn good. so check that out if you are into that sort of thing. Pittsburgh cost of living is low so that a plus. The club scene is pretty crappy and you said dance related stuff. Carson street is the best place to hang out with the younger crowed.

Also make sure you check out the Squirrel Hill tunnels -- especially in the middle of rush hour. Not to be missed! Remember, there's nothing about the roads in Pittsburgh you can't fix with a good nuke.

Revisited (Better or Worse? I'm trying to visit 'big cities' and/or densely populated ones (with over 250k people)):

EDIT: I would be staying in each one of these cities for at least one day. Not just stopping by. (Texas would be about a week-2. California is 2 weeks. NYC is a week. DC is a week. Chicago is a few days.)

Better, I would cut Phoenix and put Las Vegas in it's place and on the way back cut out the trip back through Cali and head up through Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and take 84 back in to Portland.
Some of the most beautiful parts of the US and you are simply missing them.

Oh and I hope you have an iPod or satellite radio, you have some very long, very open stretches of road there where you aren't likely to even have cell service.

I've been through Idaho and Montana before. It's not really of interest. I'm never going to live out there and I am never going to care for the sights. It's just nothingness for forever. Especially Montana...

THIS

Unless you go to northern Michigan.. really nice up there.

You can skip Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania.. most of that area really.

It's pretty obvious most of you haven't seen much of the country. If you think there is nothing to see in Pennsylvania, Ohio, or Indiana then you've been in the basement too long. Granted, Indiana might be the toughest case to make if you aren't a motorsports fan or farmer, but every state has its interesting parts (in Indiana and Ohio it's the southern bits, just FYI).

So I will give you a gentleman's pass on Ohio and Indiana, even though you're wrong. But on Pennsylvania... you just can't have seen very much of it.

Yeah I'd live in Western MI if all my family wasn't on the eastern side. It is a lot nicer out there in general.

But, there are nice areas on the east "coast" too. Overall I don't mind living here, but if I could get all of our family to move somewhere nicer I'd do it.

But everywhere has its ups and downs. Not gonna have the "grass is greener" attitude.

I'll have to take back Pennsylvania.. I did go camping in the south west area of it in the middle of nowhere.. on a very nice clear (hoping clean) river and had a lot of fun.. even had fun with getting drunk with the local rednecks. In its place i'll put up Iowa. Indiana and Ohio still suck and Illinois can be on the list too.. Chicago is ok but how many people are getting murdered everyday lately? Not much special about it.. just another huge city.

The grass really is greener outside of SEMI.. gtfo of there dude. The area has traffic, falling apart roads, crime, shit weather to offer.. thats it.

West Michigan on the other hand does have South Haven (Gingerman Raceway) and the dunes and beaches of Lake Michigan which are nice.

South side of Chicago and West side are really nice neighborhoods. You would fit in real nice there. Best times to visit would be after 10pm as their club scenes are outta control!

Yeah, that stretch West of Dallas to NM is pretty bad.

Gotta check out Cowboy Stadium / Ballpark in Arlington if you are driving through - just off I-30, you can drive to it and around it in 15 minutes and be on your way. Amazing architecture.
