$2000 is the average monthly amount I spend on Lego. You are fine.

My Mom threw out a couple of Ice Cream pails full of Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars from the mid to late 70's that would be worth quite a bit now. I gave her permission to throw them out, because at that time, the internet didn't exist, and I had no way of knowing how desirable these would be at a future date. I even had shoe boxes full of original Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica figurines that went in the trash. Dozens of figurines. 12" GI Joes.. the works.. All gone! Now that I'm in my 40's I can't help but feel sentimental towards all of these things now. I wish I could have them all back.

I need to go through my old hot wheels collection from when I was a kid. I have giant basket full of them (probably around 250 cars) and see if they are worth anything lol

Dude... Goodwill or Value Village or whatever second-hand place you have in your area.

I wouldn't worry a whole lot. The only flag that is raised is that you sold stuff to pay for it, which isn't that big of a deal if you didn't use that stuff anyways.

The problem comes when you go "hmm, I think I will purchases collectibles instead of making my mortgage payment/food/heat".

If you're worried about your spending, set a budget. While my numbers are not quite so large as yours (my income is likely also much less), I had to do a similar thing with eating/going out. Now that I have a budget, I can still enjoy myself and continue saving for a house.

And the fact that your wife seems to support your collection is a positive sign. When she begins to get worried about you, that's when you should seek therapy (amish has a great deal btw)

Counseling over $2k? I would say no. It would seem to me, that if you're asking us to validate your hobby, you believe there's a problem. Focus on what you perceive as the problem & go from there. I don't think you need us in order to do that.

$500/mo for a hobby you enjoy isn't outrageous if you can afford it

agree, but mostly dependent on your own circumstances.

the fact that OP sold some stuff is a responsible sign, but if you need to sell stuff to fund it, might also be a sign its too much.

I have nearly every G1 Transformer from '83-'86. A few Japanese exclusives, too. All are in great condition with many being mint and all are complete with all accessories. About 20% have original boxes, blister pack cards, and instructions. I started recollecting them in the late '90s when I was in high school after rediscovering them online and having fond memories of them as a child. I know they're worth a pretty penny now, but I can't force myself to part with them.
