So let me give you a brief background. I grew up in a country where average per capita income is pretty low, and American Toys while they were available costed a tooth and nail. So there were quite a few that I wanted but stayed in my dreams.

Now I am in the US, for the last 10 years, and recently went to my first Comic Con. I found a few Transformers, GI Joes and Masters of the Universe figures that I liked and bought them. Came back home and started reading up on them, and found forums to these figures. Over the last 4 months, became very active on most of them. Found out what all I was missing from each collection line and got them from Ebay or from stores if they were still available.

It has got to a point that I know when trucks show up at Toysrus, Walmart, and Target. and I stop at these stores during lunch or after work every other day. My wife has not complained and she even got me a cabinet to display them.

But looking at my credit card statements, I saw that in 4 months I spent over 2000 on toys. To kind of make up for the spending, I sold my ipad, my bedroom tv, and all videogame consoles. Is it time to seek counselling?

Well, at least you a have a wife. I don't think there's anything wrong with being an avid collector of something.

Why would you collect modern toys?
The only reason older toys are worth anything is because of the rarity.
They didn't make millions like they do today.

You don't need us to validate your hobbies. If it isn't causing a problem in your personal or professional life then you are probably OK.

Just budget your toy spending expense.

I don't see a problem... According to this forum, everyone else is either buying guns, gun accessories, video cards, cars, more guns, etc. -- sorry, "collecting".

Draw the line when you no longer display your stuff or keep it organized. That's when you cross the line into hoarding.

I have a friend.. well acquaintenance is more like it.. who know kidding has a Star Wars collection valued over $1M. It takes up his entire garage plus 4 storage units. He's got like who know's how many original boba fet dolls (and every other character) still in the unopened original packaging. Props from the actual movie. Carrie Fisher, Mark Hammil, Harrison Ford's and just about anyone else's autograph on pictures where he's met them and stuff.

The guy has a pretty involved Hot Wheels collection too.

IDK what he does with all that stuff or why he keeps even 1/3 of it, but if he was ever hard enough up for cash he could flood Ebay for decades.

Don't see any problem with it. I collect comic books and my wife is ok with it. As long as you can afford it and don't dig into your savings I think it's fine.

I remember once, a few years ago now, KMart had Hot Wheels on sale around Christmas time so I went to to pickup a few for my son.

I couldn't believe how many grown men where there with lists digging through the bins looking for ones they didn't have yet.

A couple of them critiqued my selections and seemed taken aback when I said that in a week they would probably be completely destroyed. lol (My son was rough on his cars. I keep telling him he'll never drive one of mine. )

You're fine man. Toy collecting at only $2K for 4 months is nothing. You should try going out sometime, that's where the real money sink is. Or crack.

I have a G1 Transformers Jetfire. Complete, in box. No yellowing. Could be tempted to sell with the right offer!

Dear Friend,

I would like to help you through this troubling time. I am available to be your counselor to help with your "addiction". I have received many certifications off the internet and can guarantee* that you will be able to break your $500/month habit of toy purchases.

I offer you my services to council you for four sessions (one hour session minimum) at a cost of my standard bill rates, $545 per hour. With my help you will be able to break this habit!

Thanks,

Amish
