When a venue can physically seat more then the others its not saying much to say that more people were there. Its like saying that more people attend an nfl game vs an NBA game. well sure, because the NFL stadium seats 2-3 times as many people.

some sports can't even fill the venues they got. Tell me more how larger venues will help.

With that picture, you're also comparing a sport that has 82 games a season in 1 city/building. Hard to sell it out for every_single_game.

Speaking of baseball stadiums, we went to Petco Park in San Diego on Saturday to see Billy Joel in concert. The place was packed. Man, he puts on a good show. There had to be 40,000 people there.

At least -- Petco holds 42,000+ Toss in all the seats on the grass, and your at 50K+ easy.

The sheer fact that NASCAR can put 50k+ fans into seats is impressive to me.

I may be wrong, but I believe a lot of venues for these races allow outside food and drink which is probably a big factor. There's a cooler size limit but that may vary with location, so it's pretty open.

Getting people to fill the seats is important but the shear difference in size of the venues make the stat basically useless.

Edit:
Look at the list of stadium sizes. The list is dominated my motor racing.

So you think these NASCAR venues were just built as big as they were just for kicks? and that no type of planning/estimates were done to see what the appropriate size would be?

Well, that works for the newer venues. Most of the older ones however were built with MUCH less seating than they have now. The older venues had to be renovated, some more than once, to add more seating as the sport's popularity grew. So I guess they didn't plan properly the first time around.

By the way, Nascar has never been nor will it ever be the world's most popular sport. It doesn't even make the top 10.

Soccer is still #1

Its also one of the worst forms of motor sports in terms of excitment IMO.
A local dirt or asphalt track provides way more interesting racing, costs 10% of much to get in and the drivers dont cry on TV when they trade paint..

MotoGP is still number 1 in terms of excitment, F1 would be up there, but the MB domination mades it boring.

There is no accounting for sports popularity since Cricket D: is #2 or #3 depending on which poll you look at.

And then there is Field Hockey.

Actually, it impresses me as well. It's shocking to me that 50K+ people will show up.

That being said, I'd think NASCAR is something better watched on TV. You get more information, more "feedback" than you do at the track itself.

I agree. The couple of NASCAR races I've been too felt like sitting next to the interstate for three hours watching cars go by then sitting in a traffic jam for three hours.

Really easy to just say "turn left 500 times and win!" but that's actually a completely ridiculous statement.
Completely ridiculous. If you turn left 500 times, you only make it 125 laps. You've got to turn left 2000 times to complete a 500 lap race. Amazing what these non-fans don't know.

I haven't been to a Nascar race, though Watkins Glen is fairly close to me. (That's Nascar, isn't it?) I've been to a few races on dirt tracks - those seemed much more exciting than watching racing on television. But, I think the best racing I've seen in person has been motocross racing. Those guys (and a few girls) are incredibly athletic. It has a lot of the strategies of, say, Nascar, as far as timing a pass, figuring out when to make your move, etc. I've known a few local stock car racers - I don't think you're required to be in top physical shape to, well, turn left. There's some endurance involved in driving a car for so long, but, you don't have to spend long hours at the gym lifting in order to be physically fit enough to even compete in the first place.

No, actually it's a race track. Formula One used to race there in fact.

Actually DrPizza isn't wrong. Nascar events are held at Watkins Glen. It's an awesome track! I live about an hour and a half away, gorgeous drive/town as well.

While it is true that there is a Nascar race held at Watkins Glen, Watkins Glen is not Nascar. There are SCCA races held there, there is a Sportscar championship race, Indycar and vintage racing events held there as well.

It's not just a Nascar race that are held there.

Excitement: There's a lot to be said for being able to see most/all of the track.

I've been to Laguna Seca for a motorcycle Grand Prix, and to other tracks for a bunch of AMA races. Loved them, but it's different. Chances are you'll only be able to see a handful of turns. So they rush by, you try to figure out if your favorite changed position, and then you wait staring at empty asphalt for a solid minute +.

Wait what??? How are you saying it's "not Nascar" when a Nascar event is held there? I know it's not your typical go left forever oval, but Nascar lists the track on their site, and Wiki even says as well. I'll admit I don't know much about Nascar.

NASCAR does road courses from time to time. Waktins Glen and Infineon.

Surprised? I'm not surprised. If you ever have something great and want it even better, give that task to the Japanese who will find a way to do it better than you. This is pretty much a standard constant in anything automotive, and other industries. I mean, it just is what it is.

Then once other companies get back on somewhat level footing they get praised for not sucking as they once did. It's funny.

I don't watch NASCAR but I sure would if Honda jumped in just so I could watch Toyota and Honda go at it. I much prefer dirt tracks.

By the way, Toyota invested hundreds of millions in Formula One over eight seasons and failed miserably so I find it amusing that they're dominating nascar. There is a certain symmetry to that.
