Toyota Motor Corp. reported early this morning that annual profits rose 19.8% to a company record $1.64 trillion yen, or about $14 billion.

Toyota?s revenues rose 13.8% to a record 23.94 million yen, or $204 billion, for the fiscal year, which ended March 31. Global vehicle sales in the period totaled 8.52 million units, an increase of 550,000 units compared to the last fiscal year and also a record.

?For fiscal year 2007, Toyota posted record consolidated results across the board.? Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe said in a statement. ?We believe our continuous efforts to support global growth have steadily contributed to our record net revenues, operating income and net income.?

For the final quarter of the year, Toyota?s net income rose 9% to 440 billion yen, or $3.7 billion.

The results come as Toyota is poised to pass General Motors Corp. as the world?s largest automaker. It outsold GM for the first time ever in the January-March period with global sales of 2.35 million vehicles to GM?s 2.26 million.

Toyota made gains in what was a difficult period for Detroit automakers and its Japanese counterparts. In 2006, Ford lost $12.6 billion, GM lost $2 billion and the Chrysler Group lost $680 million. DaimlerChrysler AG as a whole made $5 billion in 2006, up from $3.4 billion in 2005.

This thread is kinda funny because last night while watching the shield with the girl I couldn't believe all of the commercials from the "BIG 3" pushing their mustangs, chargers, SUVs etc.

Not that I am against these vehicles ( i actually have a suburban) but we were talking about the train wrecks we call auto companies.

Who are these all knowing, outrageously paid executives of these companies that are making the decisions?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what the problem is!

Gas is 3.00+ a gallon and all you can pimp is gas guzzling cars and SUVs that cost the average citizen a 100+ dollars to fill up. gee we don't know why we are getting beat. oh yeah it the unions!

Hello McFly.................................

So here it is

To all of the execs at the Big 3 here is a little secret

Make some cars that gets 15% better gas mileage than the competition import sedans (Accord, Camry) and has some symbliance of style! I think you can probably divert some of the borrowed money that you run on and get this right

damn is it that hard to figure out?

GM & Ford only "lost" as much as they did because they give their Top Executives multi-million dollar bonuses, usually far, far greater than the "losses" they post.
The American Tax system at it's best.

Not sure what you are referring to. Perhaps you mistook this forum for P&N, Noob?

Agreed. OP has no idea how many jobs are impacted by news like this. Not just the Big 3, but the parts suppliers for the big-3. Thousands (tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands?) of jobs (both white and blue) are being lost due to these losses from the American car companies.

It's not like American engineers are sitting around with their thumbs up their *****. They are working within the bounds of their jobs. In a lot of cases, these engineers are working harder now than ever to design products that are more inline with the foreign competition, but it takes time to turn things around, and when the money isn't coming in, there isn't much to develop with. Do you enjoy seeing your money turn into profits that flow to Korea and Japan? I prefer to see my money being used here to be reinvested into our own economy.

Ford knew this was not going to be a great year, so that is why they offered all of those buyouts and such. Why spread those buyouts over a few years to make them all look bad when you can make one year really bad and then have a few good years afterwards?

You like talking out of your a** don't you? Lets fire all the top executive and let monkeys run the companies because monkeys can do a better job for the price of a banana.

So the Japanese build products that people want (the vehicles that Toyota sells the most of are built in America), moreso than American manufacturers, and somehow we should feel sorry for Detroit and call the OP a dick?

This is a case of whoever builds the best product for consumers wins out. I don't feel sorry for Detroit one bit.

Well, WAS run by monkeys. They're turning it around, cutting the fat now, and they're also got a slew of better products - but expect them to be in the red until 2009 (at least, that's what they're projecting ).

It's not like it's the OP's fault the 'Big 3' suck ass, and i can't see that the OP putting 'Cha-Ching' after the recorded profit entitles anyone to personally insult him

yet they seem to do so well here in europe

alot of their cars are cars of the year. the quality is pretty excellent fit/finish/build wise, getting close to the likes of VW, and theres no denying they cant make a great handling car... ka, fiesta, focus, c-max, s-max, mondeo are pretty much the best handling cars in their respective classes, and usually the best value as well.

and thats before the new mondeo comes to step up the game.....that is a very very nice looking machine for sure.

in europe at least, ford make vehicles very much worth buying, do they just make cars to a loss or something?

though they did hemorage money with jaguar/land rover..... and then they sold off the most profitable part of the ford empire.... Aston Martin.

You should feel bad for them. They are obviously trying, it's not like they're delivering crap products or not refreshing any models. They are coming out with good, new cars, and backing them with good warranties and prices. They just can't help that some people "think" they suck no matter what and are in love with Toyota, or that they have so many extra expenses compared to them.

At the very least feel bad for the tens of thousands of people losing their jobs. Or you can be heartless and not.

Why are people talking like the Big 3 don't sell cars? They sell a ton of vehicles! Easily plenty to keep them afloat if they didn't have other issues. The vehicles they produce are NOT the problem, and haven't been for years.

If they were so fantastic, i *assume* they'd be making money?

Toyota apparently sell lots of cars, and they seem to make money? Perhaps the Unions are stealing all their profits, and billions more as well? :Q
