Disputing a speed-camera fine could soon be a thing of the past. Today, Toyota will unveil a car that takes away the guesswork when it comes to identifying the leadfoot in the family.

Finding the rightful recipient of the ticket could be as simple as sliding in a mobile phone-style SIM-card instead of a key. The card would contain details of the driver's licence and address.

Wireless technology would allow the car to communicate with the speed camera, and the fine could be deducted from the driver's credit card before he or she even made it home. But would anyone buy such a car?

At the moment, NSW law requires motorists who dispute a speed-camera fine to sign a statutory declaration that the driver was not the registered owner. Anecdotal evidence suggests that some motorists "share" their points with family members who may be reaching their demerit points limit.

There would be no such loophole with the Sportivo Coupe - if it were to be sold in showrooms. It is what the industry refers to as a concept car - a design tease for the Melbourne Motor Show, which opens today.

But its telematics systems are no trivial matter, according to the project manager, Paul Beranger.

"Telematics are going to be a part of our future, whether we like it or not," he said.

The smart card would not only open the doors for an authorised driver, but also set an individual's driving position, favourite radio stations and phone numbers.

Depending on the driver's experience and grade of licence, the card could control the engine power. And each driver's licence number could be displayed on the car's exterior instead of a number- plate.

As well, the car's electronic speedometer relies on signals from speed advisory signs to display the speed limit inside the car. The speedo dial reconfigures itself so that the prevailing limit sits at the easy-to-read 12 o'clock position.

I can't wait until they come to the US. Maybe the roads will finally be safe for our children.

OBDIII is has had room for such things (with GPS now becoming common).

It is calling for the ability to shut a car down for various violations. The car will not die instantly, but you will only get so many start/restart cycles and/or mileage before it goes into a limp mode or total disable.

Before anyone cries never, banks are already adopting a similar system where each month the loan payer must download a code they get once their payment has been made and upload it into the car's transponder. Failure = the car will not start.

To me this is an invasion of privacy...there can be various times when speeding may have been justified, but due to no 'eyes' on the scene there is no proof....also electronics fail....it would suck to get a glitch of solar radiation momentarily showing you travelling at 130mph through a 25mph zone. Saying 'my officer, I wasn't speeding' won't cut it.

Good god it would take me forever to drive to Florida if that were to happen. How about a car that couldn't drive faster than the local applicable speed limit? It could use the same technology as the speed camera linkup.

It would be an interesting method if applied for insurance purposes. No insurance - car no workie. Although most uninsured people are driving around in 25 year old rustbuckets worth less than their deductables. So the point is moot...at this time.

I don't like computers that spy on me, and tattling cars would not be appreciated, either. :frown:

Just imagine if your car would fine you every time you exceeded the speet limit at all. Say you went 56mph in a 55mph zone? Sorry, there goes $75 (or whatever the ticket costs - I've not gotten one ... yet ). Better learn to use that cruise control carefully, or *gasp* stay on the low side of the speed limit for "safety."

Or, what if your car simply prevented you from going faster than the speed limit? How then could you pass someone?

The whole idea is quite ridiculous, but sadly, I'm afraid it's going to happen. The government will pass a law (like they're trying to pass the CBDTPA to turn computers limited use appliances that are slaves of the music industry), and we'll all have to put up and shut up.

Over my dead or incarcerated body this will ever happen. I will tell you right now that I will be the very first person to start hacking these systems and selling them on e-bay.

Until the government charges you under the uber-DMCA v12.57 and sentences you to life in a federal prison with Bubba... :disgust:

Good to see you people aren't asleep at the wheel.

Just watch, they will also use this for taxing purposes as well.

It's all about command and control. It sickens me.

That could get expensive on the way home.

See, here's the thing. I personally don't want this in my car because I feel that, big brother ccar or not, I'm a pretty safe driver. But the rest of the people on the road are morons and I don't think they should be allowed to drive at all

Aside from the big brother aspect, the rest of the car sounds cool. The Speedometer adjsutment thing, and the memory for seat posistions and radio stations, etc.

Goodie, I can't wait to buy a car that tells the police how fast I'm going and charges my credit card for the infraction.

Technically you are not allowed to exceed the speed limit in a passing situation either.
